The movie Case 39 has been sitting on the shelf for almost over a year now. When a movie is shelved like that by the studios it usually leads to rumblings and rumors that the movie isn’t going to be very good and is expected to be a box office bomb. While the film doesn’t look particularly original, it still looks to be an entertaining little scarefest which is being released right where it should be – the Halloween season. If Paramount Vantage thought they had a turkey, maybe they did the right thing by holding off the release of the film until a more fitting time when moviegoers are more apt to be searching out frightening fare to see.
I also think that Bradley Cooper’s sudden rise in popularity has something to do with the studio finally taking the movie out of storage. It also probably helped that little Jodelle Ferland just starred in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which Paramount Vantage feels will help draw that crowd (at least the ones old enough to get into or smart enough to sneak into) to the film as well. The mix of Cooper and Ferland being in the public’s eye right now with Rene Zellweger’s staying power may have just made the time right finally.
Case 39 tells the tale of “family services social worker Emily Jenkins [who] thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case, troubled 10-year old Lilith Sullivan. Emily’s worst fears are confirmed when the parents try to kill Lilith, their only daughter. Frightened for her life, Emily enlists the help of Detective Mike Barron and takes Lily in while she continues the search for the perfect foster family. Just as it seems as though Lily is on her way to a more loving home, under the guidance of Emily and psychiatrist, dark forces surrounding this young girl come to light and, little do they know, their attempts to protect her will only bring on greater horror…”
The movie was directed by Christian Alvert and stars Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, and Bradley Cooper.
It hits theaters on October 1st.
I’ve posted the trailer and a clip for Case 39 below. The clip is entitled “Underwater” and shows “Emily Jenkins (Renee Zellweger) try[ing] to escape [from] a sinking car.” You can check the poster and a few images out from the movie up above.
