With the 3rd Season of Castle underway, the excitement mounts for those fans who have suffered through a summer of anticipation. To keep everyone informed and entertained, Seamus Dever (Kevin Ryan) agreed to talk Castle and Dever with us!
Seamus Dever (pronounced Shay-mus Deaver -rhymes with Clever) gave up some of his very precious free-time to discuss his career, with a definite emphasis on ABC’s “Castle”.
Seamus plays Kevin Ryan, one of Beckett’s invaluable detectives for NYPD Homicide, who always come through….with the evidence as well as some funny moments. Much of the romance between Beckett and Castle is seen from the eyes of Ryan and Esposito (played by Jon Huertas). Seamus has always been very enthusiastic in his role(s) and never fails to give credit to his co-workers.
Seamus, your fans are all very excited about the new season of Castle. For those who didn’t have the opportunity to go to Comic-Con and get the scoop, can you give us one small spoiler?
“By now, I’m sure you’ve seen the premiere. Castle really had to work to get back into our good graces in the first one. Coming up we’re going to see Beckett have a new love interest and meet Beckett’s first Training officer and the crimes are really interesting and unique and Castle and Beckett solve the crimes with the assistance of Esposito and Ryan. Does that help?”
That certainly helps the Castle fans who are constantly looking for news and tid-bits on their favorite show and favorite actors!
How do you pick and choose between all the available opportunities that come your way? There must be times when you literally have no time to take the roles you want and perhaps sometimes you just “take a chance” on a role?
“Well, I’m not actually that available during the year. There are maybe two and a half months that I can do work other than Castle. In the last two years I’ve done guest star roles on TV shows because there aren’t that many movies being made any more during my hiatus. This last year I did a play to fill my time. It was good to get back on stage.”
With so much time in a year taken up with Castle, how many hours a week do you average on an episode?
“In a busy episode for me, I usually shoot 14 hour days. In a light episode I might have 2 or 3 days off.”
Do you see your role as Kevin Ryan becoming more prominent in the near future?
“Yes, I always see Kevin Ryan becoming more prominent on the show. There is talk of it and I hope we get to know him a bit more, see his girlfriend, Jenny, more and maybe his background and family. There was this talk about Ryan being in the Narcotics division before he was promoted to Homicide. I’d like to explore some secrets that Ryan has in his past. But I get a lot of feedback about Ryan being an interesting character and I think a lot of fans share that opinion.”
What do you do to “un-wind” after a long shooting day?
“I come home, walk my dogs, open a beer and watch The Daily Show and the Colbert Report.”
Unfortunately, I was unable to see King Lear this past summer, but I have heard good things. What ratio would you use to illustrate your preference / Stage / Screen / TV?
“There is nothing like being on stage. That being said, I love them all equally. Hard to say. I used to love stage above all but that was when I was a single man. As I get older, the time commitment gets harder for theatre.”
Do you see yourself transitioning into movies in the future? What kind of character do you see yourself portraying in a film?
“Yes, I love movies. I want to do more of them. It has been a few years. I love playing smart asses. I got to play one in a movie called “Ready or Not”. So much fun.” Seamus obviously loves his work. He has been lucky enough to work in all mediums of entertainment and his love for acting has never waned.
“Movies are great because they combine the best things about Theatre and TV. You have time to rehearse and rewrite and make things perfect and all in front of a camera. The luxury of time is something that isn’t there in television. If you have ideas for a scene in television, you had better done your homework because there’s no time to sit and think about it. On Castle, I have some great partners that are always good for an idea and we solve things very quickly. Nathan [Fillion] and Stana [Katic] and Jon [Huertas] are always up for playing around and making more interesting choices.”
Thinking on all the characters he enjoys, he has made up his mind as to his favorite type of character to play.
“[But] I would say that smart people with flaws are my favorite to play. I’d love to play Phillip Marlowe in some incarnation or another. Someday.”
There can be no doubt that Seamus Dever is the man to watch. He can handle playing fun people, smart-ass people, bad guys or good guys. Seamus is one actor who isn’t going anywhere. We are all looking forward to further character development on Castle as well as a Phillip Marlowe movie in our future? There is no doubt that the hard work and study is paying off for this multi-talented family man.
