Cats may like to go outdoors occasionally, but keeping your kitty indoors is always safest. Here are a few of the reasons your cat should be an indoor only pet. Unfortunately, cats are abused slightly more often then even dogs are. Cats that are allowed to run free outdoors can be easy prey for animal abusers. There are some people that truly hate cats and will do anything they can to get rid of them. Allowing a pet cat to run loose outside just makes the job easier for those that abuse our feline friends. Many more cats are seen and treated at Vets office’s suffering from BB gun wounds then are dogs. Cats seem to make good targets for those that think shooting at cats is a sport.
Reason number two to make your cat an indoor only pet is traffic. Cats don’t know how to properly cross the street, and more cats are hit and killed by cars each year then are put to sleep in the U.S. If a cat has not been raised outside, it will have no idea what a car is, therefore it will not know how to cross the road safely. Even country roads can be dangerous, as motorists tend to go faster down roads that are less busy.
Thirdly, stray dogs tend to run in packs, and a cat that doesn’t know to be afraid of strange dogs, can be killed quickly by one that sees he or she as prey. Stray dogs may not have been socialized and many will not think twice about attacking a cat. Indoor cats that have escaped outdoors or been let out after been kept inside, will not be not prepared to deal with a savage dog.
Another plus of keeping your cat indoors is that they won’t get lost. A cat that is outside, especially a cat that has not been spayed or neutered, may wander far enough away from home to not be able to find their way back. Since many cats don’t wear ID collars, a multitude of problems can occur when trying to identify a cat that is looked upon as a stray. If your cat acts if it would like to be outside, but you do not have an enclosed porch or area where it can safely stay, one alternative is to make a window ledge perch so that the cat can lay comfortably in the sun and watch the going-on’s of the outdoors from a safe place. This can be done with a few piece’s of lumber and two wedges of wood or metal to hold the wider ledge in place. Most cats love to lay inside and look out. It’s a safer alternative to being outside.
