If you notice that your cat is losing weight and there is no apparent, visual reason why, it is best to have the cat checked out as soon as possible by a qualified Vet. There are many conditions, ailments and disease’s that can cause a cat to have rapid weight loss. The Vet can do the appropriate tests to confirm whether or not the weight loss is caused by a serious condition or something that can be easily treated. Weight loss may first be noticed when the cat has a lack of appetite when even the tastiest foods are offered, if they have a change in their normal behavior, or if they show symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea. A cat that is losing weight may also act unenergetic, have a change in their coat, such as dullness or loss of fur and may act depressed and tired.
One common condition of weight loss in cats is a worm infestation. Parasites such as tape worms can cause a sudden weight loss to occur, but can easily and most normally inexpensively, be treated by the Vet. If worms are diagnosed, it will be necessary to change the cats litter box and wash all bedding in very hot water, or better yet, throw them away and buy new ones. Tape worms can sometimes be seen in the cats stool, or you may even notice a worm, which is quite unpleasant to see! Tape worms in the cats stool may appear to look similar to pieces of rice. The worm itself will be like a flat, white string. The Vet will be able to distinguish which type of parasite the cat has by taking a stool sample and looking at it under a microscope. This cause of weight loss can almost always be treated quite quickly and is fairly inexpensive.
More serious causes of weight loss in cats can be disease of some sort. Some examples include feline diabetes, kidney failure, a heart problem of some sort, liver disease or an intestinal disease such as ulcerative colitis. Kidney disease or failure is most often seen in elderly cats. The thyroid gland also plays a big role in the cats ability to maintain a safe weight. If the thyroid gland is faulty, the Vet can prescribe medications to stabilize it.
Any sudden or unexplained weight loss in a cat should be brought to the attention of a Vet. It can be very concerning to pet owners to see a sudden change in their cats appearance caused by weight loss. By having the cat checked, the owner and Vet will be able to decide which course of action is necessary to allow the cat to regain back to its original, healthy weight.
