There are two main types of photo albums: the large coffee table version, with pages that hold many pictures each, and a much smaller type that’s still quite thick, with pages that hold a single photo. It’s nice to create themes for these albums, like a book full of vacation photos or an album that features the kids as they’ve grown over the years, but what if you have only a few photos with a particular theme? Wouldn’t it be cute to have a much smaller album that features only a handful of your favorite pictures? You can make such an album by using a simple cd jewel case!
With many miniature albums the pictures have to be really small. A mini album made from a cd jewel case, though, can hold pictures nearly the size of the jewel case itself. However, it can’t hold a lot of them. The little albums, when finished, can have themes like “My Day at Camp”, “The Day I Was Born”, “My First Day of School” or any other theme. The albums are ideal for a theme where you only have a few pictures.
Choose the cd jewel case you want to use. The case needs to be a square one rather than a round one. Jewel cases that are colored pink, blue, green or other bright colors work to make a much nicer-looking album than the ones that feature the clear fronts. But, if you want, you can cut a picture for the front, place it inside but facing outward, and it will give the clear case a more finished look.
Cut a long piece of paper that’s about a half-inch less than the width of the jewel case. The amount of paper that the case will hold is unknown since you’ll be deciding on the type of paper you’ll use. If you’re using thin paper, like gift wrap, the case will hold a few more pieces than if you’re using thick, scrapbook paper. Cut a long piece, and after folding it according to the instructions below, you can then determine how much to cut off and use for the album.
Fold the paper accordion style from one end to the other. Use a ruler to make sure each fold gives you a perfect square. Place the folded stack of paper in the jewel case and close it. If it won’t close, cut a section or two off of the accordion, then try again. Do this until you determine how much paper the jewel case will hold. Then, remove a couple more sections to allow for the depth of the photos you add.
Lay the folded paper out flat on a table and add a photo to each page. Create various looks for the pages by using markers, stickers, metallic or colored tape and similar flat items. Add a picture to each side of each accordion section to make a double-sided album or place the pictures all on one side to make a single spread. Brush glue along the bottom of the cd case and position the folded paper in the glue. This will permanently attach the accordion to the inside of the cd case.
The finished jewel case album can be decorated by attaching fake jewels to the front and gluing on a ribbon for tying the album shut. Make many of the little albums to create a set of various themes. It’s a fun kids’ craft that allows them to make an adorable photo album for pennies!
