Whether you’ve gotten too many internet cd’s in the mail and you hate to throw them out, or you’ve ended up with some old cd’s that are covered in scratches, you can easily put them to good use by turning them into a cute mail holder that can sit on your desk or elsewhere in the house. The finished mail holder can be yours or can become a gift for someone else.
Use a piece of Styrofoam to make the base for the mail holder. Although you can use any shape of Styrofoam a heart-shaped piece makes an adorable mail holder. You’ll find just the right piece when you browse a craft store. Make sure you purchase white Styrofoam rather than green which is for floral arrangements.
Choose the color of paint you want to use for the base or decide on a different way to decorate it. Some options include covering the base with shells, fake jewels, sequin, buttons, beads or similar things. If you decide to paint the Styrofoam use tempera paints to keep from damaging it; some paints melt Styrofoam.
Before decorating the Styrofoam cut two slits in it. If it’s a heart shape make one slit on each side of the heart. For other shapes cut two slits that are equally spaced. Set the base aside for the moment as you cover the cd’s. Use decorative paper or fabric to cover one side of the cd – the side that has a label. Glue the covering on and allow to dry.
Add some glue to each slit in the Styrofoam base. Place a cd in each slit and position them so the uncovered sides face each other. Of course, if you want, you can cover both sides of the cd’s before gluing them to the base. With the cd’s in place you can then decorate the base the way you want.
There is no set size for the base, and no set amount of space to leave between the cd’s, so you’ll decide what design is right for you. Don’t have any Styrofoam to use for the base? Use thick cardboard instead. Set the finished mail holder on a desk or elsewhere in the house. It can hold mail but can also be used as a napkin holder!
