Are regular CD’s becoming a thing of the past?
This article that I read today – http://tnw.to/16nZp – said that Britain has recently passed the 500 MILLION mark in music downloads. With different programs out there to download our music (legally, of course), do people even buy actual CD’s anymore, or are they becoming the new, slightly non-existent version of records?
Being an aspiring environmentalist, I recently, as in within the past few months, talked my household into just purchasing music off of iTunes and not in compact disc form, for a couple different reasons. One being that we don’t always like all the songs on the CD anyway, so we may as well only pay for the ones we like right? Two being that it’s a lot of waste with a CD, since you have the disc itself, and the case, and the paper inside of the case, and the plastic around it. Not environmentally friendly in the least. And third being that we have iPods that we hook up in the car anyway, so there is no need to have CD’s littering the floor of our car when they could be nicely and neatly organized on the iPod and take up much less space.
After I decided all that, and got the spousal unit on board, I took all of my CD’s and ripped them onto my Mac. I then gave all of my CD’s to a kid that I mentor, because he is still in the CD boat (give it time, I will convert him). The ripping of the CD’s took hours upon hours after work each day due to the large amount of them that we had. We did keep some that we just couldn’t part with, and some we couldn’t even rip because they were scratched up so badly (another downfall of CD’s, they never make it back in their case) but most were given away. But now, when we want a song or three, we just download them (we primarily use iTunes, for convenience, but I am sure that other places are just as wonderful) and have them instantly. We don’t drive to the nearest Best Buy or Meijer to sort through the stacks of music. We sit in our living room, without wasting gasoline, and have our songs instantly. It’s fantastic. Do you still buy CD’s?
Enjoy your day!
