Eddie Hazel joined the funk, rock, psychedelic band Funkadelic when he was only 17 years old. He immediately had an impact on the groups music, success, and overall sound. He brought a funk-rock/funk-metal sound to the music that had been previously untouched by an other artists. A Hendrix disciple, he manipulated his sound to become one of the most unduplicated guitarists in history. He brought passion to funk music through his guitar playing. He was so passionate that he was often criticized by other band members for crying whenever he was playing his guitar.
He is best known for his timeless instrumental Maggot Brain. Maggot Brain is a one-take recording that triggers nearly every emotion possible in the listener. However, his credibility is pretty much limited to Maggot Brain. His work on previous albums Funkadelic and Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow, as well as Maggot Brain and Standing On The Verge Of Getting It on is some of the most influential music to funk artists and Funk-metal artists still today. Eddie Hazel had a huge influence on artists such as John Frusciante, Korn, Prince and even Metallica for his role in the instrumentation of Metal. Eddie Hazel also was a figure in the Motown community where he played guitar and produced two records for the Temptations. He also, released a solo album, Games, Dames, and Guitar Thangs that was a perfect example of the passion and soul Eddie Played with. There have also been a couple posthumous albums released of his recorded material.
Eddie’s recognition has been limited to Rolling Stone and Spin magazine where he was named to the top 100 guitarists in both magazines. He greatly deserves this recognition and probably deserves to be higher on both lists (44 in Rolling Stone). He deserves to be acknowledged as one of the top guitarists in the Funk/Funk-Rock genre and as one of the most passionate emotional guitarists of all time. I highly recommend purchasing his albums or looking him up on youtube. Get familiar with the brilliance of Eddie Hazel. There will never be another individual like him.
