Celebrity baker Cake Man Raven was shuttered by the Health Department recently for four critical sanitary violations. The violations included the presence of flies, food from an unapproved sources, lack of a hand washing facility, and lack of a food protection certificate for the supervisor of operations.
This is not the first time that Cake Man Raven has had his Fulton St location closed by the Health Department. However, the last time the issue was resolved in a matter of days.
Cake Man Raven has had a series of run-ins with the city recently. In August a judge awarded a default judgment against Cake Man Raven for failing to defend himself against accusations from 15 former employees that he cheated them out of overtime pay. The Department of Labor is also seeking $11,000 in fines and penalties from Cake Man Raven for shorting workers wages.
An employee told the New York Times blog The Local that the bakery had been late on its water payments and its water had been shut off before the health inspection. The employee also said that paychecks have frequently been behind schedule and sometimes in cash.
