The Lewis County, WA, area is an ever-expanding hub of budding local businesses and unique shops. Known for our awesome antique district and outstanding outlet mall, our multi-faceted array of establishments are attracting more than just visitors! With our population boom matching our ventures, the local call for fitness providers to match our varied needs has become resonant, and luckily there have been many answers! Trying to keep in shape, myself, and having a close relative in the physical training profession has taken me to all of the facilities, so here are our best local gyms and who they are suited to cater to:
Our biggest area fitness provider, Thorebecks:
Providing the best in state-of-the-art equipment, classes for just about anyone, and multiple convenient locations, all at a moderate competitive price, Thorebecks rates number one in my book! WIth a friendly and knowledgeable staff and any machine you need to get that body you want, you are bound to be able to get the basic workout you need. They have fun classes that cater to the novice exerciser, including water resistance for impaired, pregnant and elderly gym patrons and gymnastics and rock climbing for children, so introducing healthy living to kids is easily done at these gyms! The Thorebecks location in Chehalis has an excellent healthy snack bar, and a rock wall, while the Centralia location is nestled in the middle of historic Borst Park, is open 24 hours and has an Olympic sized pool; both have relaxing saunas, as well.
The downsides? They do lack serious trainers and they come at an extra cost, for those of you who have strict regiments to meet in order to retain muscle or bulk up. There are no on-hand certified dietitians (at the time), they are very large, yet usually packed and busy at all times, and they oftentimes tend to have “meet” market issue, where people dress up and stand around to look good and chat.
Overall, a great place to get a good workout, or, hangout– and great for the whole family! Want to just check it out? A day pass is only $7, if you need to see how you like it there!
Curves gyms for women:
Centrally located between the two cities, in the Fairway Shopping Center, is the our Curves. The franchise is especially suited for women, and helping them with their weight loss and health goals, but this one in particular one is an inspiration! The owner is also a former client, with an incredible weight loss journey that would encourage women to join and follow her footsteps. Now half the size she was when she begin, she engages with her patrons and helps them to maintain their goals with encouragement and pictures of her former self. And since this is a women only facility that is mainly geared toward achieving a healthier body, you are constantly surrounded with support from others as well! That, along with excellent equipment for any body-type, an all inclusive staff with your monthly dues (that means training and diet are provided!) will have you at your goal in no time!
The downsides? There aren’t any really, it just isn’t for everyone.
Run by a former bodybuilding champion Terry Curry, Fitscape is better suited for the more serious lifter. Its a little bit more expensive per month, but if you buy your monthly dues in enough quantity, they decrease substantially. They have an excellent equipment selection and very adept staff who can advise you on specific strategy and routine that add some real muscle mass! It is family friendly, if you are comfortable with your children using real gym equipment, and its never too crowded there so you have readily available machines and can generally find a helpful trainer if you have any questions.
The downsides? At the moment they aren’t providing classes, though they are working on it, and there isn’t much that is geared toward those who aren’t, at least, somewhat acquainted with their workout needs and are familiar with their personal circuit.
Anytime Fitness, much like its name denotes, is open… any time. Their equipment is very nice, and their staff is just the same; neither stand out as bad or great, but meets standards. A clean and upbeat facility that isn’t often too crowded, likely due to its proximity to the Centralia Thorebcks (and its criminally inconvenient parking!), Anytime Fitness offers you all of what is needed for the average workout of a beginner or moderately experienced gym patron, and removes much of the hassle and headache of larger gyms that can, at times, lengthen your trip.
The downsides? The company policy allows for very rare instances of membership cancellation, and so they are notorious for giving you guff when it comes to trying to get out of their contract. If you want to find a way out of your remaining months, its best if you tell them you are moving to China! Other than that, the only issue would be the lacking parking in the shopping center of the Centralia location.
