As I walked my loving streets of Brooklyn the other week I can across a sign for a new apartment-hotel complex, being built in no other place but North Williamsburg. Now, this disturbed me as you can imagine, because Brooklyn, is Brooklyn, everything about us is different and an apartment-hotel complex is so Manhattan. I am not all together mad about it though. I understand the need to build in the area, New York needs money, Brooklyn has the space. The only issue I have is that, the people who are building are not considering the people who live in the area. All this new development is good on one end, it brings in money especially as we get ready to have to Nets come to town, but it causes more traffic, and potentially crime.
Williamsburg has always been a quiet neighbor hood in my opinion. It is different from other parts of Brooklyn, and it is right across from Manhattan. They have their own bridge going into the area, and their own ways. All of this development is going to change that. Williamsburg is becoming the new Soho, a place for people who have dreams of making it big, just do not have the prices. All of this development is going to raise property values so high that people won’t be able to live in the area anymore. It almost seems like they want to push people out of the area, but of course that could all be in my head.
I am not sure of how this will play out yet, but will everything changing in Brooklyn, I wonder how will people survive. The zoning laws were changed a few years back, making it easier for people to build on the land, but they never really considered how it would affect the people who lived in the area. Money, rules most things, and as we see it will be taking over Williamsburg real soon.
