No matter what hair type or length you have, chances are at some point you’ll want to experiment with color. Your reasons for hair coloring may be to coincide with a life event, cover gray or simply for a change. Well, if you’re trying to work beauty into a tight budget have no fear. There’s plenty of ways to get beautiful results without going to a salon.
I’ve personally colored my hair at home for all the reasons mentioned above. From experiencing life as a fiery red-head, covering grays, to achieving a more polished look for job interviews. I’ve tried them all and on the cheap. Here’s some ideas from what I’ve tried.
For the Health and Environmentally Conscious:
At your local health food store you can find natural henna hair treatments. These treatments are not costly, have no chemicals, and work with the natural tints in your hair. Henna is a great way to experiment for the first-time hair colorist, since the results will not be drastic and the treatment is not complicated. Many health conscious hair coloring products can now be found at health food stores. There are several brands and shades available that are environmentally friendly. These are pricier than henna products, but give a more professional result.
For the Budget Conscious:
Be on the look out for sales at your local grocery, retail, or drug store. Have an idea in mind of the shade or look you are trying to achieve. Then browse the aisle. It helps to not be brand-specific. There are almost always reduced brands at every store. When you find a hair color on sale you can even buy another color for touch-ups or to mix.
Yes, I said mix. It is quite possible to create your own shade by mixing hair colors together. This is a little more complicated, so you might ask a friend to help with the application so your hair color doesn’t come out streaky.
The most important thing is to have fun. There’s plenty of sophisticated hair coloring products available, that don’t break your budget. Just be sure to read the directions on the products you chose, wear gloves, and allow yourself a few hours or less for the treatment.
