Part 5 of the Child Pornography Series
Child sex crime raid leads to identification of the location where Donald Bakker carried out his sex crimes
It was because of the Dateline coverage and the tiny room where the sex acts were carried out that the Canadian authorities were able to pinpoint this exact room as the location where Bakker carried out his dirty deeds. The calendar, and the holes or marks in the walls were all in the exact same place as seen on Bakker’s video. It was a perfect match!
The location was pinpointed, now the Canadian police needed to identify the girls in the video. They then turned to the International Justice Commission for help. It turns out that four of the girls in Bakker’s videos were from the very same raid in that little village in
With the help of Dateline and the International Justice Mission, they now had everything they needed to convict Bakker. To make sure the conviction would hold up in court, the Canadian authorities flew down to Cambodia to investigate and see to it that they had an airtight case.
Kevin McCullough, Bakker’s lawyer said the sex tapes alone would never have convicted his client, it was the help of Dateline and it’s broadcast that sealed the case and made the difference. He said, “That was something that was truly a needle in a haystack. The police would never have been able to solve this case, and it would have gone simply uncharged.”
Bakker was convicted and placed behind bars, for seven years (still not very much time in Montrealer’s mind).Montrealers generally feel the sentencing should have been much longer based on how he ruined these childrens’ lives. Remember some of these girls were as young as five years old.
What became of the Children?
The girls are placed in Cambodian save houses and once again the smiles are returning to their young faces. It will be a long healing process. We can only hope for the best for these girls.
