If you are looking for a garden project that is easy enough to make with your children, try making a birdbath out of terra cotta pots. The supplies are low in cost and found at hardware and garden supply stores. The project allows you to be creative by decorating the pots with paint or making a variety of sizes to accent empty garden spaces.
The supplies needed for this project include:
2 terra cotta pots (12-inch or 14-inch diameter work well)
1 terra cotta saucer
Sand the surface of the saucer and both pots to smooth any rough areas. Wipe the surface with a clean cloth to remove all dust particles. Decorate the pots with paint, adhesive decorations or etching before applying a sealer. Paint the terra cotta with paints rated for outdoor use since they do not fade as quickly. Spray a polyurethane sealer on all surfaces if the saucer and pots to prevent premature weathering damage to the birdbath.
Prepare the birdbath location by digging a two-inch hole slightly wider than the upper rim diameter on the terra cotta pot. Flip the pot over and place it rim down into the hole. Fill soil around the rim of the pot to hold it in place. Apply silicone caulk to the bottom surface of the pot. Set the second terra cotta pot on top of the first pot so the bottoms match. You will create an hourglass shape with the two pots. Finish the terra cotta birdbath by placing the saucer on top of the second pot to create a bath. If you want to secure the bath to the birdbath base, apply silicone caulk to the top rim of the second terra cotta pot and set the saucer on top.
Decorate the inside of the bath by adding stones, ceramic frogs or other decorative pieces to give the birds something to stand on. Fill the saucer with water, stand back and watch the birds enjoy your new garden decoration. This is an excellent project to recycle old terra cotta pots.
