It’s an incredible story of hope, courage and 33 miracles as the Chilean miners who’ve been stuck underground since August 5 are being lifted one by one to above ground. At this point (October 13, 9:35 am ET), at least 12 miners have been taken via a capsule some 2,000 feet to safety.
The very first miner rescued was Florencio Avalos, 31, who wore sunglasses for protection from the lights situated aboveground, and stepped into the arms of his wife Monica and his 7-year-old son Bairon who was crying. The president of Chile, Sebastian Pinera also greeted Avalos.
The second rescued minor was Mario Sepulveda Espina who said, “I think I had extraordinary luck…I was with God and with the devil – and God took me.”
Espina and his family were holding hands as the miner said, “I am so very happy. I’m 40 years old and will live many years more now to honor those who helped”, referring to the rescue team.
