China Max is one of the newer restaurants to be added this year to the River Hills Mall Food Court in Mankato, Minnesota. It’s located between Kentucky Fried Chicken and the Gyro King restaurants. I have tasted a handful of entrees at the China Max restaurant between two recent visits.
Their sweet and sour chicken and sesame chicken are very good. The sesame chicken as a lot of flavor, as does the bourbon chicken they offer. I was also impressed with their plain white rice. It wasn’t dry at all, and was actually the sweet, sticky rice variety that has more flavor.
I did not care for their vegetable lo mein noodles. They were very bland, and were almost like spaghetti. I tried it twice, only because my kids requested them, but was disappointed each time. They offer two different egg role varieties, including vegetable and chicken. I haven’t had the chance to try the vegetable egg rolls, but I really like the chicken egg rolls. They weren’t too greasy, and were just right in texture. Egg rolls cost 99 cents each. Entrees start at $4.59 for one entree, $6.39 for two entrees and $7.39 for three entrees. Each entree comes with a choice of rice or noodles. I have yet to try their fried rice, but it looked good. There were at least a dozen entrees to choose from.
China Max also offers sides of white rice for $1.59 and mixed vegetables for $2.29. I was a little disappointed in the selection of mixed vegetables, as it was mostly cabbage, and only a few pieces of broccoli and carrot slivers. While it was okay in taste, there is only so much cabbage one can digest in one sitting.
For vegetarians, the menu also features a veggie plate for purchase. It includes a choice of rice or noodles, mixed vegetables and a vegetarian egg roll. Kids’ meals are also available for purchase, and cost $4.39. They include a choice of rice or noodles, plus an entree and drink.
China Max usually offers free samples of their entrees through out the day, and the staff is always smiling and very friendly.
