Increasing number of parents are now using chiropractic care as part of their children’s health regimen.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now indicate that a minimum of three percent of all children in the United States now have regular chiropractic care.
Chiropractic care is for all ages from the very young to the senior citizens in the world. Chiropractic care for children is there for preventive wellness care and maintain the body’s structure. Health of the spine impacts the total nervous system which controls and synchronizes all the systems contained in the body such as respiratory and immune.
The body of a child does not become injured the same way as an adult nor or they worked in the same manner. As the child grows their bodies are put under immense strain just by daily activities like crawling and jumping rope. Daily activities such as those can cause injury to the spine and nervous system a little bit at a time. Over a length of time these injuries have accumulated and can lead to bones and joints in the spine becoming misaligned. If the misalignment is not corrected it can end up leading to spinal degeneration, osteoarthritis and more.
Chiropractic care is not mean to replace pediatrician. In all actuality, chiropractors and pediatricians do work well together to ensure a child’s overall health.
Studies have been done proving that chiropractic care not only is effective for children in areas of back and neck pain but also in other various conditions such as asthma which more and more parents now seek chiropractic care to manage their child’s asthma symptoms. They also have been noted to aide in ear infections, colic, bed wetting, scoliosis, sports injuries and more.
Chiropractic care for learning disorders and dyslexia
A study which was published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research has shown that chiropractic care carried a broad range of benefits for children with learning disorders and dyslexia.
After a review of eight studies consisting of over 155 children, there was substantial proof that chiropractic treatments can aide in numerous cognitive disabilities.
Learning disabilities and dyslexia are commonly known as a neurodevelopmental disorder. Children that endure these problems have a parts of their brain which do not function normally or even delay development. Among those areas is a part called the cerebellum which is an important part in learning. It aides the brain to coordinate and combine numerous sensory information and heightens the speed of processing the information.
Many elements can affect the brain from developing correctly such as traumatic birth and stress during pregnancy. The ongoing stimulation of the brain comes from the spine and the position of muscles constantly change to the force of gravity. If a misalignment in the spine occurs called vertebral subluxation, the brain does not receive proper stimulation which produces problems in other areas of the body.
Chiropractic adjustments improve the functioning of the spine and vigorously stimulate the nerve pathways of the cerebellum and other brain areas. In children it aides the brain to function properly for learning.
Chiropractic adjustments have been note by many parents in improving their child’s dyslexia and learning problems.
Spinal adjustments for headaches have been well documented in children. The Journal of Chiropractic Pediatrics have noted five cases were children showed a well response to adjustments.
In one case a thirteen year old with headaches and neck pain had received a chiropractic evaluation and treatment. After the second week of treatments the child had no headaches. After four weeks of treatments none of her headache symptoms had reoccurred. This study was part of a group of thirty children resulting in 28 children having excellent results after treatments.
In another case a ten year old with migraine headaches for three years had received treatments. After the first month of treatments he had only two occurrences and not in full migraine state.
Due to the fact there is not one main site for vertebral subluxation the chiropractor will evaluate the entire spine of the child for subluxations. A specific adjustment will be used to the area or areas causing the problem.
More than thirty eight million children participate in organized and unorganized sport activities. Injuries among sports will happen. Boys receive more injuries playing foot ball while girls see most injuries from soccer. More injuries occur during practice than in the actual game. Among the injuries 30 to 50 percent are overuse injuries, 59% suffer sprains and 48% dislocations.
Chiropractic care aides in the prevention of sports injuries through adjustments, therapeutic exercises and stretches which the child can do before, during and after activities.
Spinal adjustments have been used to prepare the body for the activity of sports. The adjustments are once again used afterward on the spine if it should become misaligned.
The United States Olympic Committee and The National Football League keep chiropractors on staff for players. They have been in attendance at noted sports events such as Goodwill Games.
Their treatments aide the supportive tissues, tendons, muscles and ligaments.
Chiropractic care has been noted as effective for colic. Chiropractic treatments usually consist of lengthening and stretching the body in order for the intestines to be kink free. Many chiropractors will view colic as a spinal misalignment therefore, they will do a few small adjustments. The treatments for colic are known as colic release techniques.
Many times chiropractors will give the parent exercises to be done with infant each day which are only about ten minutes total a day.
It has been stated that babies who have colic and receive chiropractic treatments in 70% of the cases show a significant improvement in symptoms. The other 30% notice a decrease in colic symptoms.
Other noted case sites for chiropractic care and children
Director of the Psycho-educational and Guidance Services of College Station, Texas, has remarked that within the last decade of students referred to him among those who had received chiropractic care showed the most benefits. Among the benefits was those students who lacked motivation and failing subjects after receiving care became highly motivated and passing their subjects. Also, they had improved in coordination and the ability to participate in sports activities.
An eight year old boy who was extremely hyperactive, irritable and had behavior problems at home and school along with marginal grades and medication of Ritalin at 70mg daily had been see by a chiropractor to receive treatments. After treatments a significant decrease in nervousness, improved emotions and school performance was noted by his mother. She also stated his appetite had returned to normal and he now enjoys school.
In another case story, chiropractors had taken care of 244 children in a Kentucky reform school.
The staff noted health improvements and school performance in the children. They now employ a fulltime chiropractor.
Another girl who was taking Ritalin who was noted to be negative, passive and doing poor in school along with being non-verbal had undergone chiropractic care. After chiropractic adjustments she no longer need Ritalin and her reading and comprehension skills vastly improved.
The exact reason as to how subluxations affect the brain function is still not determined. Theories include that chiropractic care improves blood flow to the brain, enhances brain functions. Others tend to believe that it halts unhealthy nerve reflexes in the spinal cord.
Many children even those of school age benefit from chiropractic care. A child’s spine needs just as much attention as an adult. Adjustments made for functional problems which develop in a child’s spine can be corrected by a chiropractor using adjustments geared to the source of the problem.
Chiropractic manipulation is a very skilled treatment and when it is used in children it is very gentle. Chiropractors use a hands on medication free treatments. Their treatments include full examination, diagnoses and then treatments. Most parents note that their child enjoys going to the chiropractor for monthly visits just as part of their routine health care.
