Not much thought is given to getting a new keyboard for your home computer, but if you sit at your computer for more than two hours per day it’s important to get a keyboard that is comfortable to you. It’s also important that it has all the features that you need to make your computing experience better. I’ll give you my opinions on what makes a computer keyboard good and you can adjust it to fit your needs.
One of the first things a keyboard needs to have is high keys. I don’t like typing on a laptop type keyboard. I need the high keys so I can better feel the keys. I really prefer one that clicks when the key is pressed. I know it’s kind of noisy but it makes me feel I’m typing faster. You can also go for the more ergonomic keyboard that are stretched in a u shaped pattern so your wrists aren’t bent like on a plain straight keyboard. I personally don’t prefer these but you can decide. Also with many keyboards they have a small pad or sloped plastic piece at the bottom of the keyboard. And the back of the keyboard can be raised using the tabs. The height of these tabs vary, so make sure it’s the exact height you like.
Another feature I look for in a keyboard is the multimedia features. One of the most important keys on my keyboard are the volume controls and mute button. If I get a phone call with the internet radio playing I can just hit the mute key without even bothering with the mouse or speakers. This, for me, is a must have feature. Other multimedia features include starting programs like email and internet explorer. You can even make your computer hibernate by using the sleep key on many keyboards that have multimedia capabilities.
There are many other options for computer keyboards but it takes you picking one out for yourself and knowing that you’ll spend a lot of time on it. If you type later into the night when the light is scarce you may want to look into getting a keyboard that has a back light to illuminate the keys. Just find one that is comfortable to you and has all the features that you want in a keyboard and you’ll be fine.
