Client server software and web based software each have their own advantages and disadvantages, similarities and differences. In the current times of technology organizations have turned to both of these software types to boost productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness in service delivery, organizational operations, and competition in the market.
Client server software is software that is the responsibility of the organization. This includes programs that can be purchased of the self, such as Microsoft Office; and programs that can be purchased and downloaded, such as CASEWORKER software provided by the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission (Texas Juvenile Probation Commission, 2010).
Client server software is, in my opinion, a better choice for smaller organizations. It can be accessed in or out of the office, support several users at a time, and be customized based on agency need (Clouse, 2010). However, client server software can have many disadvantages. Some of the disadvantages of client server software are larger up front costs, the responsibility of all upgrades to the system, and most access is limited to inter-office access (Clouse, 2010).
Web based software is of another breed. Web based software is operated over a web server. Web based software requires only internet access, there is nothing to download. An example of web based software is the California Child Support Automated System (CCSAS). This is one of the largest web based software system, currently serving 1.6 million clients (California Child Support Automated System, 2010).
Web based software, in my opinion, has much greater potential for the organization and the clients it serves. Web based software has the ability to better control costs, eliminates the responsibility for upgrades, promotes access where ever an internet connection is available, and gives information in real-time (Clouse, 2010). This is a newer technology and one of its disadvantages will be training staff to use it in the most efficient way.
Obviously each organization should weight the pro and cons based on their own organization and its processes.
