With the popularity of the AMC show Mad Men taking off, it is no wonder that all eyes are on Christina Hendricks – the lovely actress who plays secretary Joan Holloway. Hendricks is known most for her signature (dyed) red hair, but what strikes my eye has always been her makeup both on and off the set. Though the makeup artistry on Mad Men is spot on for its time period (the 1960’s), not all of us feel comfortable with the vintage look. If you’d like to learn how to imitate a beautiful, elegant Christina Hendricks inspired makeup look, keep reading!
Start by using the concealer of your choice to erase any blemishes on your face. If you don’t like to use concealer or find it too cake-y, you can do what I do and use foundation as a concealer by using a brush and very lightly brushing the product over your blemish until it is hidden. The goal is to cover as many flaws as possible, as Christina’s skin looks flawless every time we see her.
After you’ve concealed, use your favorite liquid foundation to even out any part of your face that has an uneven skin tone. I like to use the Revlon Colorstay liquid foundation. Optional, but recommended: Set the liquid foundation and concealer with a colorless powder, such as the Mineral Veil from Bare Essentials.
Next, we’ll add the warmth! Christina has quite a naturally pale complexion, but never uses bronzer in her red carpet looks. All of the warmth is brought to her face by using rosy blushes! Choose a shade that contrasts against your skin tone but remember – a little bit goes a long way, so build the color slowly! I like Orgasm by NARS or the rose shades from CoverGirl for a look like this one.
As far as eye makeup goes, the simpler the better. Though Hendricks only plays a character from the 60’s on television, her eye makeup always tends to be reminiscent of the era. Modernize your eyes by choosing a cool silvery shadow for your lids, and dust a color that is only slightly darker than your skin tone into your crease. Blend thoroughly; Christina’s makeup is always flawless and in makeup, blending makes perfect! Bring the look to life by adding thick winged liner, using either dark brown or black liquid or gel liners. MAC cosmetics makes incredible gel liners, but if you’re looking for something less pricey, check out L’Oreal’s H.I.P collection. Winged liner takes practice, so do not be discouraged if it seems cumbersome at first. Finish your eyes with a pop of shimmery white shadow at the inner corners of your eyes, and a coat of mascara.
To finish your Christina Hendricks makeup look, pick a sheer, deep pink lip gloss. You can choose whatever you like to be frank, but my go-to lipgloss for a look like this is the Neutrogena MoistureShine Lipgloss in the discontinued shade Flirt (#15), but any fun pink gloss will complete the look beautifully!
Voila! In a little under 15 minutes, you have perfected a complete Christina Hendricks red carpet inspired makeup look. Enjoy looking fabulous!
