I have two toddlers, so I’m always in search of easy holiday crafts for them. What I love about this popsicle stick Santa Christmas ornament is that it only requires four materials. My toddlers seem to do really well with popsicle stick crafts. The relatively large size of the sticks are easy for them to handle. These ornaments are an easy craft for kids and very cute. Here is everything you will need to make popsicle stick Santa Christmas ornaments with your kids this holiday season.
Materials for Popsicle Stick Santa Christmas Ornament Craft
To make popsicle stick Santa Christmas ornaments you will need 8 popsicle sticks. If you don’t have any saved popsicle sticks around the house, dollar stores usually have bags of craft sticks for a dollar or two. While you certainly can use mini craft sticks, if you have young children you will want to use regular sized popsicle sticks as they are easier for small hands to work with. The only difference in the finished ornament will be size. You will also need white, red, peach, black and pink acrylic paint. Don’t use oil based craft paint as it will seep into the wooden sticks and not coat the sticks well. You will also need a 3″ x 3″ piece of white cardstock, a 6″ length of green yarn, white craft glue, a paintbrush and a scissors. You could reuse a thin piece of cardboard you have around the house instead of purchasing cardstock.
Directions for AssemblingSanta Christmas Ornament Craft
The first thing you will want to do when making your Santa Christmas ornament is to paint the popsicle sticks. Paint six sticks white and two red. Set these aside to dry. When making this Christmas craft, I usually paint the sticks the day before I assemble the ornament.
Assemble the Santa Beard & Hat
Once the popsicle sticks are dry, arrange the white sticks on the piece of cardstock. Begin by placing one white stick in the center of the cardstock. Position the other four white sticks, two on either side of the center stick. Stagger the lengths of these sticks similar to stair steps. Place the remaining white stick horizontally across the top of the other sticks. Arrange the red sticks into a triangle on top of the horizontal white stick to make a Santa hat.
Paint the Santa Face & Hat
Mark the position of the sticks with a pencil. Remove the sticks. Paint the area of the Santa hat red and paint the Santa face peach. Allow time for these to dry. Then, using the end of the paintbrush handle, dot on the pink cheeks, black eyes and nose.
How to Assemble Popsicle Stick Santa Christmas Ornament Craft
Cut around the hat and face, leaving an edge around to glue to the popsicle sticks. Also make sure you leave the hat and face attached to each other. Glue the sticks to the cardboard and to each other in the configuration given above. Allow glue to dry completely. You may need to dry ornament overnight. Loop and tie the yarn. Glue the knotted portion to the back of the ornament. Let dry completely before hanging.
