Old and worn out maps, whether local or global, are fairly easy to find. This recycled map embellished ornament project gives such items a new life in the form of a Christmas decoration that can be enjoyed year after year!
For this project, you will need (per ornament):
– One four inch glass ball ornament
– Paper towels
– Paper cup
– Old paper map in any geographic style (world, state, road, local, etc.)
– Craft knife
– Self healing mat
– Sponge brush
– Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Catalina Mist
– Hot glue gun and glue sticks
– 1/2 inch wide mint or brown satin ribbon
– Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
Before starting this ornament craft project, cover the space you will be working with old newspaper sheets and/or a large drop cloth. Take off the hanging cap from the clear glass ball ornament. Set it aside, as you will not need it until the end of the project. Use hot soapy water to wash the glass piece. Rinse, dry the outside with paper towels, and leave it upside down un a paper cup to dry for several hours. (This will allow any excess moisture to evaporate completely.)
Use an even coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White on the ball ornament. Dry for an hour before proceeding. Paint the glass ball ornament with three to four coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Satin Catalina Mist. Let the ornament dry overnight.
Place the recycled map flat on a self healing mat. In pencil, determine the area on the map in which you wish to incorporate into your project. Carefully cut out this area with a craft knife.
Apply a moderate amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage style medium to the back of the paper map piece. Adhere the map piece directly onto the painted glass ball ornament. Smooth the map paper with your fingers to prevent any wrinkling and/or bubbling on the ornament. Continue to add map fragments until you have covered the ornament. Dry overnight.
Heat up the hot glue gun. Add a dab of glue to the hanging cap and reposition it on the glass ball ornament. Cut a length of mint or brown satin ribbon to thread through the hanging cap for placing the ornament on a Christmas tree.
