At the darkest time of the year comes Christmas, the season of light and hope. But for far too many of the children of the world Christmas is just another day of hunger and misery.
By sharing out of our abundance with a needy child, those of us blessed with prosperity can help make a Christmas full of love, not only for the child we help but for ourselves as well.
It’s a good feeling knowing that you have made a difference in a child’s life. What greater Christmas experience could there be than giving a child hope and help?
All children need the basic necessities of life; food, clean and safe water, shelter, clothing, education, health care when needed, fun and playtime, peace and freedom, but most of all love-love that makes the giving and sharing of all the other life necessities possible.
There are many ways that you can help a child at Christmas. One of the easiest, but ultimately most rewarding, is to help fight hunger in children by donating food once a day through one of the click to donate sites on line, such as The Hunger Site and others.
Make a Christmas promise to yourself to visit once a day throughout the Christmas season and click to donate food to hungry children around the world. Each time you click that means one cup of food or more is donated.
If you prefer you can donate food to your local food banks during Christmas. Many food banks are stretched to the maximum to get food to all the clients they serve. Go through your cupboards and fill a box or two with nutritious foods like peanut butter, tuna, soups, etc, then drop it off at the food bank. There are hungry children in your city, whether you ever see them or not.
Maybe you and your family would prefer to donate your time by volunteering to fill the food boxes at your local food pantry, or helping prepare or serve the holiday meal to the homeless at your local shelter.
Another good way to help children at Christmas is to donate clothing and other needed items to your local woman’s shelter. Many women and children arrive at the shelter with only the clothing on their backs and they need everything from clothing, personal care items, food, and even toys and books for the children. Call your local police station or social services resource center for information on how to donate to a women’s shelter.
There are also International organizations feeding and providing shelter, clothing, and other needs to children around the world. You can also sponsor a child though out the year through many of these organizations. Food For The Poor, Save The Children, and many others are doing wonderful work around the world helping children.
By opening your heart to a child this Christmas you are helping to make the season a time of true hope and light for the children of the world.
Somewhere a child is waiting, perhaps even praying, for help this Christmas and you could be the answer to that child’s prayer.
