Even though the liberals are continually shouting “tolerance, tolerance” for all to hear, the reality is that Christians are facing an increasing amount of animosity from those very same liberals. This display of irrational animosity towards Christians has led to a new expression, Christophobia. But Christians should not be dismayed by these tribulations, because they have put their faith in Jesus Christ and He has overcome the world.
The Truth of the Matter
In September, 2000, Jody McLoud, principal of Roane County High School in Kingston, Tennessee read a statement over the PA system at a football game. The reason for reading the statement was to inform the crowd that it was no longer legal for a prayer to be spoken at the beginning of the football games. But Jody Mcloud had much more to say than just that.
“As I understand the law at this time, I can use this public facility to approve of sexual perversion and call it an alternate lifestyle, and if someone is offended, that’s OK. I can use it to condone sexual promiscuity by dispensing condoms and calling it safe sex. If someone is offended, that’s OK. I can even use this public facility to present the merits of killing an unborn baby as a viable means of birth control. If someone is offended, no problem. I can designate a school day as earth day and involve students in activities to religiously worship and praise the goddess, mother earth, and call it ecology. I can use literature, videos and presentations in the classroom that depict people with strong, traditional, Christian convictions as simple minded and ignorant and call it enlightenment. However, if anyone uses this facility to honor God and ask Him to bless this event with safety and good sportsmanship, Federal Case Law is violated. This appears to be at best, inconsistent and at worst, diabolical. Apparently, we are to be tolerant of everything and anyone except God and His Commandments. Nevertheless, as a school principal, I frequently ask staff and students to abide by rules which they do not necessarily agree. For me to do otherwise would be at best, inconsistent and at worst, hypocritical. I suffer from that affliction enough unintentionally. I certainly do not need to add an intentional transgression. For this reason, I shall, “Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s,” and refrain from praying at this time. However, if you feel inspired to honor, praise and thank God, and ask Him in the name of Jesus to bless this event, please feel free to do so. As far as I know, that’s not against the law'”yet.”
The term means an irrational animosity towards Christ, Christians, or Christianity as a whole. It has become the mission of increasingly vocal groups of Atheists, Humanists, Pantheists and others to push Christianity out of the public square. These groups, who suffer from Christophobia, are determined to remove any and all symbols of Christianity from the public square. Using the federal courts, they are trying to erase any vestige of the reality that our country was founded on the belief that mankind is granted certain rights by a Creator.
The Christian community in America looked toward Communism as the source that would bring persecution to our shores. Many did not realize that the real threat to freedom would come from within our own institutions. Remarkably, we have come to a point in our culture where being a Bible believing Christian is no longer accepted as normal. Indeed, even within the ranks of the modern church, some people no longer accept the scriptures as the inspired Word of God.
Liberals, in the past, have claimed that all they wanted was a free exchange of ideas, with everyone free to express their own opinion. They preach that what is needed in our society is tolerance toward differing ideas and practices. But now that the liberal world view has begun to gain in popularity, their position has changed. On the one hand, this tolerance that they keep talking about has been extended to just about every group. While, on the other hand, the liberal elitists have decided that the Christian world view should no longer be tolerated, especially in the public square.
For years now, the liberal elitists have demanded that their right to freedom of speech, no matter how offensive, be protected, while producing materials that include movies, books, magazines, billboards, music, radio, television, etc, that are particularly offensive to Christians. So, what is the liberal response to anyone who is offended by their material? Too bad. When the Christian community complains, they are told, “don’t watch,” “don’t listen,” “don’t read,” “don’t go.” In the world view of the liberal elitist, if what they want to do is acceptable to anyone, then everyone who is offended will just have to live with it.
Tribulation? Persecution? Praise God!
The tolerance of everything except Christianity, this is the Christophobic world view that Jody McLoud is describing in the address at the football game. But as Christians, let us not despair in our tribulations. Instead, let us rejoice. “we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” (Romans 5:3-5 – NASB)
We need to remember that as Christians, we cannot be defeated, because we have become conquerors through Jesus. “Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Just as it is written, FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG; WE WERE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED. But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:35-39 – NASB)
