Two elements of the film were discussed with Lucas, Spielberg, and Kasdan contemplating the idea of giving the movie major subplots. Even though they ended up being nothing more than little plot points in the finished film. The kidnapping and supposed death of Marion Ravenwood and the monkey they find in Cairo.
One idea was to have four or five scenes based around this monkey, a companion of a friend who came up with Indiana Jones during their early years in the archeology field. This character would later become Sallah, and the pet monkey he briefly had with him in the finished film.
While the monkey was Sallah’s pet, he was also trained to be a Nazi or Arab spy. Among the ideas were to have the monkey be in on a plan to poison Indy and Marion, but the only indication of this in the finished film is when the monkey dies by eating a poisoned date.
Marion’s supposed death after her abduction by The Nazis was also said to be a bigger element at this point. The three men even discussed scenes where Indy consoles her parents, but all we see onscreen is her abduction and presumed dead before she is revealed to be alive in a scene with the villain, Rene Belloq.
