I’m not particularly skilled at using electric or hand tools so I’m a big fan of projects that allow me to build and create without the use of tools. There are many different décor projects and crafts you can do using only a hot glue gun. If you’re a person who doesn’t like to work much with tools you’ll enjoy this easy project that turns ordinary clay pots into an attractive shelf for just about any room in the house.
Clay pots come in a variety of sizes so you can easily build a shelf nearly any size you want. The pots often have a gritty feel to them so it’s necessary to clean them well before using them in a craft project. The best way to clean them is hot, soapy water, but it takes a couple of days for the pots to dry completely. A second choice is to wipe the pot well with a damp cloth.
Create messages with the pots by painting them and then using a chosen method for making a letter on each one. Spell out “WELCOME”, “BATH”, or other words to create a theme for a particular room or area. Create the letters on the pots by using stickers, paint markers or even foam shapes. Using the terra cotta messages you can create a shelf with a holiday theme or even a shelf that spells out your little girl’s name.
The clay pots don’t necessarily have to be used to convey a message to your visitors. Instead, you can create a theme on the pots and display the finished shelf somewhere in the home. Themes can be anything from lighthouses to teddy bears to Native American designs. Make the sets by using stickers, rubber stamps, stencils or other techniques.
No matter how you decorate the terra cotta you’ll align the pots on a flat surface when finished. Leave a small space between each one or butt them together to create the look you want. Use a flat piece of wood from a craft store to make the shelf itself. They sell many different sizes, from long to short, and from wide to very narrow. A little hot glue will help you secure the board across the row of clay pots.
If you’re making a really large clay pot set it isn’t necessary to actually attach the board to the pots. Simply position it across the row of pots and set whatever you want on the shelf.
The clay pot shelves look great in a child’s room to hold small toys or in the kitchen to hold spices. Make one for the bathroom and stack small soaps on it. Since you can make virtually any designs on the pots, and you can use the shelves in most any room, there are no limits to the possibilities for the various shelves you can make using those ordinary clay pots!
