If you have stubborn stains in your kitchen sink, you can clean them with a proper cleaner instead of injuring your arm by scrubbing. There are many products on the market today for cleaning stains, yet very few of them seem to do the job. Many times, an inexpensive powdered cleaner that has been around for decades works better than a new generation liquid with a high price tag.
Comet or Other Abrasive Cleanser
Dampen your kitchen sink with water. Shake the powdered cleanser on the sink and stains. Let it set for thirty minutes. Scrub gently with a scrub brush. Rinse thoroughly with hot water. This should clean the stains from your kitchen sink. Comet or another powdered cleaner are usually safe to use on most materials. Read the packaging of any product you use to see if it is appropriate for the surface of your sink such as porcelain or stainless steel. If it does not, you may have to use a more powerful method such as bleach.
Not only are powdered cleansers the least expensive cleaning product, but they can be used throughout the house on many surfaces and they are very effective cleansers.
If the stain persists on a white porcelain sink, pour bleach on the stain until it disappears and then rinse thoroughly. Do not use bleach on stainless steel or other surfaces that you are not sure about. Bleach can damage some types of surfaces. If you are unsure, you can do a test for colorfastness in an area that cannot be seen such as under a cabinet. Never mix bleach with ammonia products because the fumes that will be created can be toxic.
To remove rust stains from a kitchen sink, you should use a rust remover designated for the type of material your sink is made from. Read on the package to see if it can be used on porcelain, stainless steel and tile safely. Rust removers are the best cleaners for rust stains. Bleach may work on rust, but it also may only fade the color of the stain. Powdered cleansers usually do not remove rust stains from any surface, but you can always try it.
If you use the correct product for your stain removal, you will not have to scrub as much. If you are scrubbing hard and the stain is still visible, try a different product.
