Can’t find last year’s jack-o-lantern basket? Good! Now your child doesn’t have to carry around that orange plastic pumpkin that looks like all the other trick-or-treaters’ and doesn’t match his costume whatsoever! This year, he or she can carry a made-to-order candy bucket that holds more and goes with his particular outfit.
There are lots of ways to make a coffee can into a unique Halloween basket for your trick-or-treat kid. Fake fur is one choice for making a hairy bucket in a hurry. Cut a wide piece of orange or black ribbon then glue the ends of it to opposite sides of the can. Cut the fur to the length and width you need to cover the can and glue it in place. If you want, the ribbon handle can be covered in the fur as well.
Make a different candy bucket by using pom-poms. Make a shape, like a ghost, with white pom-poms then cover the rest of the can with black ones. Or, spell out “trick-or-treat” in one color of the pom-poms and use another color – or a combination of colors – to cover the remainder of the can. Little girls will love this version because pom-poms come in colors of pink, blue, gold, silver and other shades that can be used to make a girlish candy bucket for a little Cinderella or Snow White. Instead of pom-poms you can also use cotton balls.
If you can’t find last year’s jack-o-lantern bucket, but you still like the look, just glue orange fabric around the can. Trim the raw edges with orange ribbon or lace. Cut out black felt shapes to create the face. Or, use Halloween-theme fabric to wrap the can and instantly create the look for the candy bucket.
Colored tissue paper makes it easy for kids to decorate the coffee cans themselves. Simply tear off pieces of it and glue them onto the can. Make the can a giant jack-o-lantern, a green and black monster or even a white ghost with black eyes and mouth. Instead of tissue paper you can use crepe paper or gift wrap in a similar manner.
Let’s shake it up a little this Halloween and put away those orange plastic jack-o-lanterns once and for all! This year, your child will have a custom candy bucket that holds plenty and looks much different than everyone else’s. Now that all our kids have a new basket, let’s go enjoy a cup of coffee!
