The college football rankings week four release will show Iowa falling out of the Top 10. The college football rankings week four revelation that could be the most intriguing though, is which team jumps up into the Top 10 to take their spot. Coming into week four of the college football rankings, Iowa was ranked No. 9 in the AP Top 25 and No. 10 in the Coaches’ Poll. They lost a tough game to a really good Arizona team on Saturday night, and that will definitely cost them some spots in the polls. It shouldn’t be devastating though, because as we pointed out, it wasn’t a huge upset for Arizona to win on their home field with the defense they have this year. It will however propel Arizona higher than their current No. 24 in the AP Top 25.
The other big loser on Saturday was Houston, which got beat by UCLA 31-13, and will fall out of fall out of both college football polls. That leaves room for at least one school to join both polls, and it is presumed that California will fall out of the Coaches’ Poll after getting beaten badly by a Nevada team that is turning a lot of heads. The easy fix would have been to push Clemson up into the Top 25, but they lost in overtime to Auburn, and will have to wait a bit longer on the outside of the picture. Then there is Georgia Tech, which beat a North Carolina team that would have been worth a lot more if more than a dozen North Carolina players weren’t suspended. Air Force would have been another interesting team to push into the rankings, but they too lost a close game on Saturday, their loss coming to Oklahoma by a score of 27-24.
The bottom of the Top 25 polls could get very interesting, but we think Michigan State deserves to make it into both polls, that Oregon State should push into the Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, and that Pittsburgh should be on the doorstep. If Pittsburgh can beat Miami next weekend, then they deserve to shoot right back into the rankings. In the AP Top 25, it’s time to recognize Missouri, as they need to be in the Top 25. The other team that deserves some recognition now is the Nevada Wolf Pack, who post one of the best offenses in college football right now and posted a nice win against California on Friday. They face Brigham Young next, so if they don’t make the polls this week, they should be guaranteed a spot in week five with a win over BYU.
Both college football rankings should be out by mid-Sunday.
