Identify the best time to study. You may have to schedule around classes, work and fun time. Another thing to consider is when you are most alert. If you have other obligations during high peaks of alertness (for you specifically), it may be a good idea to see if you can change anything around within your schedule so that you can utilize your high peak study time.
Start with the hardest and work your way to the easiest. Some people tend to put off the worst for last, but when you begin studying, you will be the most alert and sharp and this is the time to be working on subjects that are difficult for you.
Take plenty of breaks and don’t study for too many hours at once. You should be getting up and moving around for about 15 minutes once every two hours or so. When you get up, stretch, take a short walk and make sure you’re drinking plenty of water.
Avoid study distractions. This includes loud music or TV noise in the background, studying around other people (unless it is in a study group or you are studying with a friend) or in other similar situations. Choose a study place that is quiet and relaxed where you have all of your necessities, if possible (a bathroom, access to food and drink and comfortable places to lay and sit).
Don’t forget to have fun and relax! This is especially true if you are working all the time too. It’s important that you have your fun time so that college life doesn’t drive you crazy.
Study whenever you can. For example, if you’re at the Laundromat or sitting on hold on the phone, use this time to study one of your textbooks or work on homework.
Change your surroundings every once in a while. It gets boring studying in the same place all the time. In fact, if weather permits, try studying outside. This is a nice and refreshing change of atmosphere.
Make sure you stay healthy. Get plenty of exercise, lots of sleep and eat regular meals. Snacking on fresh vegetables and fruits throughout the day can also help you stay alert.
