Night owl film lovers in Columbus, Ohio can get their fix at the Alive! Late Night Movies every Friday and Saturday at midnight at the Gateway Film Center.
The Gateway Film Center offers a different movie every week culling from a library of comedies, cult classics, action flicks, cartoons, horror movies and other films. Admission is only $6 making this night out a great bargain.
Each month the Late Night Movies follows a theme. In the past, they have paid tribute to director Terry Gilliam including “Brazil” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and October featured horror films such as “The Exorcist” and “Re-Animator”.
Other monthly themes have included a tribute to Tim Burton and comic book heroes and the theme for December will be classic and cult hit holiday movies.
With the success at Studio 35 with monthly midnight screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, Columbus had room for a more regular midnight movie. Introduced in early 2010, the Gateway midnight movies attract an eclectic audience. A screening of “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” brought an audience ranging from their teens to mid-50s.
Before the midnight movie, fans can stop at the Martini Shot Bistro where this locally owned theater features other local businesses. Included in the lineup of 20 beers on tap are selections from Elevator Brewing Company and the full bar features Columbus’ own OYO Vodka. Anyone needing a caffeine jolt to make it through the midnight movie can get their fix of Stauf’s Coffee. Standard movie grub is available as well as more upscale bistro items.
In addition to the midnight movies, the Gateway Film Center screens major releases and independent films.
Located in the South Campus Gateway at 1550 North High Street, the Gateway Film Center is easy to find. Parking is available at the adjacent Gateway Garage for $1 (up to four hours) with entrances off of 9th and 11th Avenues.
