There are a number of pet stores in the Vestal, NY area and each have their pros and cons. Not one of those stores is a pet superstore that will have every need for every type of pet. You need to know which store will benefit you based on your needs, knowledge, and what you are willing to pay. Here is a comparison of pet stores in the Vestal, NY area:
Comparison of variety of pets available:
PetSmart: PetSmart in Vestal, NY sells fish, reptiles, small animals, and birds. PetSmart is the best place to purchase a reptile. They sell a number of baby reptiles, and at times sell them at amazing discounts. Just because you can buy a bearded dragon cheap, doesn’t mean the pet isn’t healthy. Their reptiles look fat, happy, and healthy and are not sick before you bring them home. As for fish, PetSmart looks like they have a large selection, but it is often the most common freshwater fish in many tanks. There have been many complaints about fish dying quickly when purchased from PetSmart.
Pet Depot: Pet Depot in Vestal, NY, located near Wal-mart, sells puppies. While they claim that the puppies come from local breeders, it is a little hard to believe that a reputable breeder would sell their dogs to a pet store. You take the risk of supporting a puppy mill when you buy anything from Pet Depot. You take the risk of buying a sick puppy, too. Pet Depot also sells fish, but have few to choose from. Most of the time, the tanks are empty, lights aren’t working, or the fish are dead. On a plus side, Pet Depot sells more exotic pets like centipedes, frogs, and tortoises.
Petco: Petco is in Johnson City, NY near The Christmas Tree Shoppe. They sell fish, small animals, and birds. Their fish selection is mostly common freshwater fish, but they do have a few saltwater fish to choose from.
Creature Comfort: Creature Comfort, in Binghamton, NY, has a nice variety of fish. This is the best place to go for fish of many species. You will find a variety of freshwater fish, and saltwater fish. Creature Comfort is also the only pet store in the Vestal, NY area that sells brackish water fish. They also sell small animals, but their expertise is lacking with these animals and you risk getting ill or pregnant pets.
Comparison of variety of goods available:
PetSmart: PetSmart has lots of variety of goods for all types of pets. They sell products for exotic pets, including sugar gliders. They have many options for each type of product, as well. You could spend all day looking at fish food and picking just one.
Pet Depot: Pet Depot has a large variety of supplies for cats and dogs. There is an entire wall just for leashes and collars, giving you tons of choice. They sell many options for dog/cat food, and even some lesser-known brands found nowhere else. As for other pet supplies, you will find few of anything.
Petco: Petco has a good variety of supplies for typical pets like cats, dogs, and small animals. They have little for exotic pets and fish. You might find two types of filters to choose from and that’s it.
Creature Comfort: Creature Comfort has a nice variety of products, but usually have very few of each item. You will often find something you desperately need is out of stock. For a store that sells so many fish, they have few fish supplies. They do sell plenty of tanks, for all pets, just not much of anything to put in them.
Comparison of pet store employee knowledge:
PetSmart: PetSmart employees in Vestal, NY are very friendly. Many have gotten into conversations for quite awhile, even when nothing was bought from the store. Although friendly, they are not the most knowledgeable employees. On a good note, they admit they don’t know everything and are just doing their jobs. That’s better than pretending to know everything and lead you astray. When purchasing a pet from PetSmart, do your own research first. Which is what you should do anyway.
Pet Depot: In Pet Depot, it is difficult to find an employee to help. Sometimes, employees will ask to assist you, but it isn’t often. When you have questions they are not very knowledgeable and will often seem bored or unwilling to help. It’s OK to not know the answer, but at least try to help.
Petco: There are not many employees on the floor. Sometimes you’ll find yourself waiting while the “expert” for that area you are in can be found. When they are found, you might not get a very thorough answer. They do have answers when it comes to common pets, but know little when it comes to exotic pets.
For example: A customer had a tank with sand instead of gravel, and was looking for a filter that wouldn’t suck up the sand but still work well. The employee had no clue about filters, and she was the “expert”.
Creature Comfort: Ah, Creature Comfort. Great store, great fish, stuck-up employees. Here’s the good news about Creature Comfort employees: They are required to have extensive knowledge with pets. They care about the animals they sell, and will make sure that you are prepared before selling them to you. Now, here’s the bad news about Creature Comfort employees: They don’t know everything, despite pretending that they do. When it comes to fish, they have a lot of knowledge(but do lack some knowledge. Do not buy dragonfish from them, as they are very unhealthy). Their knowledge is lacking when it comes to the other pets in their store. Very lacking.
The sad thing is that Creature Comfort employees will not sell you a pet if they do not feel you are capable of taking of it. This seems great, but sometimes their fear is unfounded. What they need to do is prepare the customer, teach them, and give them what they need instead of refusing to sell the pet altogether.
Example: A Creature Comfort employee refused to sell more than one goldfish to a set of grandparents because they said the fish were a birthday present for their four-year-old grandson. The employee said the child was too young to take care of the fish. Of course he is, but he wouldn’t be providing the care, would he? The parents would be. At most, the child would be given the proper amount of fish food and allowed to feed the fish.
Do your own research before buying a pet from Creature Comfort, and be prepared for an examination by the employees when you do.
Comparison of cost:
Petsmart: The products, and pets, at Petsmart can come with pretty steep price tags. The cost of crickets is insane. However, you do get what you pay for.
Pet Depot: They have decent prices, with some items costing a little more. These are usually the products not found anywhere else.
Petco: The prices at Petco are decent. You won’t find things too high priced, but no cheap deals either.
Creature Comfort: When you need crickets, Creature Comfort is your cheapest option. Everything else is decent enough in price.
