If you want to make a huge statement in a particular room a wall mural is one option. However, murals are really expensive, and after they’re up, they serve no purpose except to be visually attractive. You can create a large design on the wall of a kid’s bedroom, and even though it is similar to a wall mural, this one will actually be useful.
Wood-look contact paper is just what you need to make a huge wall tree that’s unique and handy. The tree is easy to make, easy to hang, and after it’s up it will be the focus of the room. That’s because it is so unusual, but at the same time, just what a child needs to keep things neat and orderly.
Roll the contact paper out so that the right side of it is facing down on a table. Draw a basic tree trunk design to begin. It’s helpful to know ahead of time how tall you want the tree to be. Keep in mind the height of the child; he or she will need to be able to reach the limbs of the tree.
Since the limbs of the tree branch out it can be difficult to draw them onto the paper at the same time as the trunk. Most contact paper is not really wide so it’s best to draw the branches separately. On the main piece of paper, draw the trunk, and on up into the branches that spring from the center of the tree. To add additional branches, ones that go off to the right or left of the main tree section, cut these separately. Cut branches that are large at one end but gradually get much smaller.
Start at the bottom of the wall and peel a little bit of the paper from the back of the tree shape. Smooth the section onto the wall before peeling a little more of the backing away. Work your way up until the main part of the tree is attached to the wall. Now cut and stick the branches to the tree.
Decorate each branch with some leaves. The leaves can be ones that are plastic or even silk. Or, you can cut leaf shapes from scrapbook paper. Double-sided tape works well to affix the leaves to the various branches. After the leaves are attached you can then finish the craft by adding wooden pegs. You can purchase pegs that have a nail or screw already inserted in them. Find these at most any home improvement store. Paint the pegs brown to match the contact paper tree. Screw or nail the pegs into the branches, here and there, around the tree. Kids can use the unique wall mural to hang coats, book bags, sweaters, jewelry hair accessories and much more!
