If you are running a phpBB forum, one of the things you may want to change is the avatar settings. These settings will control what your members can use as avatars, the size the avatar can be, if you want to allow avatar uploads, and more. It is a good idea to set the file size limit too, because that will keep people from using really large files and taking up unnecessary space on your site. This guide will show you how to change your phpBB forum avatar settings.
Your avatar settings are located in the general section of your admin panel. To get to this section of phpBB, you will need to sign in as the administrator. Then go to the admin panel and you will see the General tab at the top of the page. Make sure this tab is clicked. Down the left side of the page, look for the Avatar Settings link, under Board Configuration, and click it. That will load your avatar settings for your forum. On the right side of the page, you will see the settings. We will take a look at those settings below.
Enable Avatars – Your first option is to decide if you even want to allow avatars on your forum. If you don’t then you can click No and save your settings. The rest of the fields will not matter. If you do, you can click Yes, but Yes should be checked already.
Enable Gallery Avatars – If you want to allow people to use avatars from the gallery, you can enable this section by clicking yes. If not, click no.
Enable Avatar Uploading – If you want to allow users to upload their own avatars, you can enable this section.
Maximum Avatar File Size – This is where you will want to enter the maximum file size an avatar can be. You want to keep the size kind of small, so that your site is not loaded with these avatars.
Minimum Avatar Dimensions – This is the minimum width and height the avatar can be. By default, it is 20px x 20px. You can leave this as it is, or you can delete it and enter what you want.
Maximum Avatar Dimensions – This is the maximum width and height the avatar can be. Again, you can leave the defaults or delete it and enter your own measurements.
Avatar Storage Path – This is where avatars will be stored. You can leave this path as it is.
Avatar Gallery Path – This is where the gallery avatars are stored for users to use. You can also leave this as it is.
When you are finished with the avatar settings page, you can click the Submit button at the bottom of the page and the new settings will be saved. You can make changes to these settings any time you need to by coming back to the avatar settings page and changing what you want.
