The spin off from “Happy Days”, “Laverne & Shirley” gained just as much popularity, if not more. The sassy and spunky gals from Milwaukee, who spent their days capping bottles in the brewery and spent their nights looking for love, are beloved characters that live on in the hearts of millions of television viewers. If you and your best girlfriend, or even you and your guy are looking for a fun couples themed costume to wear this year for Halloween, consider dressing as these lovable and wacky fictional 1950’s gals.
Laverne De Fazzio was a quick witted, tough talking, middle class girl who didn’t have a lot of money, but certainly had a lot of spirit. Laverne was somewhat plain, but paid attention to her appearance. She dressed in the style popular of the 1950’s and always looked neat and as fashionable as her paycheck would allow. Penny Marshall’s Laverne character wore her hair in a short and full style, with the length a little below her hairs. She had bangs and the top was teased to appear full and resemble the 1950’s beehive. If your hair is close in length to Penny Marshall’s hair when she appeared on “Laverne & Shirley,” use hot rollers to give the top of the hair some height. Roll your bangs to curl inwards at the forehead. Dress in a long sleeve, fitted sweater and either Capri pants or a jeans rolled up at the ankle. Black flats or folded socks and tennis shoes can be worn. Knot a scarf and tie it flush againstt the neck. One part of the Laverne costume that can not be left out is the signature cursive “L” that Laverne wore on all her sweaters. Adding this little detail of the costume will ensure that everyone will immediately know who you are.
Enlist the company of your best girlfriend or a very confident and outgoing guy to dress as Laverne’s partner in crime, Shirley Feeney. Shirley was the more demure and gentile friend of Laverne. She had a short, dark pixie hairdo that was cute and practical at the same time. As this style is not so popular in this time period, a trip to the Halloween party store may be in order to purchase a wig that closely resembles this style. Shirley dressed in basically the same style as Laverne, with an emphasis on simple, but feminine clothes. She wore more poodle skirts and simple white blouses with button up sweaters on top. Saddle shoes, or plain white sneakers with cuffed white socks are perfect for the lower part of the Shirley Feeney costume.
Fun Extras For Laverne & Shirley Costumes:
Both Laverne & Shirley worked in a brewery, so both halves of the duo can carry beer bottles throughout the Halloween festivities. The Shirley character had a stuffed animal named “Boo Boo Kitty” that she was especially fond of, so a stuffed black Siamese cat would be appropriate for the Shirley character to carry.
