Released in 1960, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” was quite ahead of it’s time. The slow build up of suspense surrounding Marion Cane’s arrival at the Bates Motel, followed by the brutal shower murder and then the surprise twist near the end of the film that revealed that Norman Bates had taken on the alter ego of his mother after her brutal slaying at his hands, shocked and thrilled movie goers. This many decades later, “Psycho” continues to delight horror movie lovers. If you and your guy are looking to dress in a unique couples themed costume, consider the classic characters of Norman Bates and Marion Crane.
Norman Bates Costume: From all outward appearances, Norman Bates was a shy and conservative guy, very clean cut and neat in dress and grooming. He wore his hair in a very short, dark style very common to how working men wore their hair in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. If the male counterpart of your couple has light hair, he can darken it to resemble Anthony Perkins’ hair in the movie with the aid of a temporary spray. It was parted neatly on the side. A pair of dark jeans, or black dress pants, a white collared dress shirt and a black turtleneck over the shirt can complete the costume. A plain pair men’s dress shoes can be worn on his feet. The beauty of the Norman Bates costume is the simplicity and the amount of comfort it provides.
Marion Crane Costume: Janet Leigh’s Marion Crane was a stunning blond beauty who was well groomed and quite nicely dressed. The office worker whose series of poor decisions led to her untimely demise, wore clothes typical of the time period including straight skirts, and button up cardigan sweaters. Her hair was quite short but with a nice wave to it that added body and fullness. A few turns with a large barreled curling iron can give your short hair a bit of the curl that Janet Leigh had in the film. If your hair is too dark or too straight, search Halloween party stores to find a suitable wig accessory that you can make changes to to closely represent her hair. Stockings and heels can also be worn for the costume as well as simply jewelery and carefully applied makeup. Marion Crane was a very attractive woman who took pride in her appearance.
Fun Extras For The Norman Bates And Marion Crane Costumes: No Norman Bates costume would be complete without a prop knife that the character used to stab poor Marion in the shower. A few splashes or squirts of artificial blood can be added to the edges of the knife. The Marion Crane half of the fictional couple can carry a folded up newspaper to represent the hiding place she used to conceal the embezzled money that she sadly didn’t get to return. If the female duo wants to go all out, a large piece of shower curtain with shower rings attached can be carried throughout the evening in a nod to the famous murder scene of “Psycho.”
