At the beginning of “Covert Affairs” Season 1 Episode 10 “I Can’t Quit You Baby,” a gentleman is caught at the airport with rough diamonds in his box of medical supplies. Stupidly, he actually tries to run.
It seems that there is a ring smuggling blood diamonds from Angola which are being used to finance local rebels. An official at the London Embassy named Vivian, a geeky, chunky, yet oddly appealing young woman, is helping things along by clearing these shipments through customs. It is now up to Annie to infiltrate the smuggling ring and find out who is who and what is what.
In the meantime, Annie is called upon to arrange for a field trip for her niece’s third grade class to the Smithsonian, her cover job. Auggie warns her that anything involving third graders will never turn out well.
Nevertheless, Annie finds herself in London under her cover, with an added twist. She now has a gambling addiction.
Things are going swimmingly at a London craps table for Annie to conspicuously lose a lot of money that she will desperately need to pay off. Things almost get derailed when she places a thirty-or-so-to-one bet as a way to lose the rest of her money, but then wins. Awkward.
Annie assumes a glassy-eyed look for someone who has just gone insane and let the money ride. Easy come easy go.
Oh, I owe the casino a lot of money. Oh woe is me. Whatever shall I do?
Vivian, who really is too nice a person to get involved in international diamond smuggling, suggests a solution to her problem. Annie leaps at the opportunity to settle her debt and get in contact with the smuggling ring.
But in the middle of all this, Annie gets a call from sis back in the States. It seems that the third graders are stuck outside the museum and no one ever heard of Annie Walker. A quick call to Auggie makes things right. Interesting point about Auggie. He is hunky (and so we are informed by every woman fan of “Covert Affairs”), kind, generous, soft-spoken, intelligent, and good with kids. It has to take all of his spy craft to avoid the hordes of women who want him to set about them.
In the meantime, it seems that Henry Wilcox, a former CIA official whom we have been assured is evil, is back in the fold and serving as a consultant for the operation, much to the ire of Arthur and Joan. When Annie finds out, because she speaks Turkish, that the smugglers plan to terminate Vivian’s services with extreme prejudice, Wilcox advises to let her walk into the trap so as not to blow Annie’s cover. Arthur then suggests that his services are no longer required.
The upshot is that Annie and Vivian are about to get capped when Jai and company show up. There is a lot of shooting, but in the end the smugglers get the worse of it. Vivian is able to mitigate the consequences of her actions by spilling everything she knows about the smugglers, which is considerable. Hopefully things will turn out alright for her and she will find a less illegal way to affirm her sense of self worth.
