The Cowboys and Aliens trailer that was released today definitely brings excitement and mystery. The first Cowboys and Aliens trailer also could bring confusion, and audiences try to figure out exactly what is going on in that trailer. From the first images that they released, it appears that aliens are coming to the Old West, and that people in the area have to start working together if they want to survive. Many questions might emerge though, including whether it is an attack, an invasion, or if the aliens are there to abduct someone in the midst.
The first trailer also reveals that the cast is pretty impressive, with Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford apparently leading the way. Olivia Wilde and Sam Rockwell are also part of it, with Jon Favreau serving as the director. Favreau has really made a name for himself lately, with films like the Iron Man series, Elf, and Zathura to his credit. Now he comes at us with Cowboys and Aliens, a film that is packed with action apparently, and one which could turn out to be a smash hit of the 2011 summer movie season. That’s a long time to wait, but maybe that’s why they have released this teaser trailer so early.
We posted the trailer on page two if you are interested in viewing it, but we urge that you go into it with an open mind. The trailer isn’t really serving as an explanation for the film, but rather to create interest in the genre before more trailers come out in the future. For a teaser, it is quite long in duration, clocking in at about two and a half minutes of footage, including several scenes that appear to be 10 to 15 second of movie time in length. That’s not a bad way to drum up interest for the movie, but it also runs the risk of people learning too much about the story before it even gets into theaters.
Cowboys and Aliens seems to be walking that fine line between giving the audience an understanding of the premise and giving away too much. Sure, we all get that the aliens are coming into the Old West here, but why are they there, and how on Earth will it be believable for these cowboys to stand up them? There is a lot of source material that you can read about this story, and I am well aware of where it came from, but this first trailer does risk alienating an audience before it captivates them. Take a look at the trailer yourself, and see what you think below.
