It’s the Cowboys vs. Redskins to open Sunday night football this week. The Cowboys vs. Redskins game also begins the defense of the NFC East division title from last season, against none-other than their rival in the Washington Redskins. Last year went quite differently for both of these teams, with the Cowboys winning the NFC East on their way to the playoffs. The Washington Redskins finished 4-12, and made their way to the top of the 2010 NFL Draft. Now they will meet to start off their 2010 NFL schedules, and see what their offseason acquisitions can do for them right out of the gate.
The 2010 Dallas Cowboys schedule is going to be a bit tougher than in past years, but they have the advantage of playing two games against a very weakened Philadelphia Eagles roster. Quarterback Donovan McNabb is now in Washington, and that simply means Dallas plays him twice for a different team this year. It will be key for the Cowboys to rush and rush hard on McNabb, and make him move around behind an offensive line that has way too many questions. This is the first year of a rebuild in Washington, and Dallas has to find their weaknesses early in the first quarter.
The Washington Redskins are a team with dozens of question marks, ranging from their new coach and starting quarterback, to the stress that Albert Haynesworth has caused during the offseason. Does anyone else find it odd that McNabb’s last game for the Philadelphia Eagles was against Dallas, and now his first game for the Redskins is also against Dallas? It means that McNabb knows this Dallas defense, and has to play better than he did in last year’s NFC Playoffs against them. The Washington defense will also have a very tough task of stopping the talented wide receivers from Dallas, so McNabb needs to run the clock in order to rest his defense.
The Cowboys vs. Redskins game is getting primetime coverage on the east coast through NBC, with the kickoff scheduled for 5:20 p.m. PST (8:20 p.m. EST) at FedEx Field. We will see right away if the new-look Washington Redskins can hold serve on their first game of the season, or if the Dallas Cowboys are even better than they were last season. It’s a very interesting match not just because they are division-mates, but because this could finally be the re-birth of the rivalry if Washington can prove that they finally have a good team on the field again.
