There are many homeschooling families that use the workbox system for their school, even though most of their child’s school work is online.. The original workbox idea was created by a mom, but her version, does not seem to work for everyone. Especially for families who happen to live in a smaller size home, and use programs like Time4learning.com, for their school. What I have learned is that when it comes to any system you can easily change it to fit your own home, and what works best for you. Below you will find several variations of the workbox system. I have been eagerly working on setting up this system in my own home, and after a little bit of trial, and error we finally seem to have found what works. If you are considering using a workbox system, some of the variations listed below may prove to be helpful.
In the original system they recommend that you use twelve boxes, but this may not work for families that use an online program. I have found that since my family uses an online program, we only need to use about four workboxes. This really seems to make sure that all of the book work, and paper work gets done. Even though we use an online program we still have plenty of worksheets, and additional projects that need to get done. Using the four workboxes is really easy to work into your day. I also found that younger children do not seem so overwhelmed by the small amount of boxes.
Easy to follow chart
An easy to follow chart, to go along with the workboxes helps young children learn to follow a schedule. You can set up your chart the same way that they do with the workbox system. Since you only have four boxes, I would recommend that in between some of the numbers you have a special, or fun activity. For example when they look at the chart they will see the number one. This means that they start with box one. When they are finished with box number one they very simply remove the card from the box and place back in the chart slot. After the number one, or two you can put a card that allows them to have a ten minute snack break. To see how the snack breaks’ work, check out the article “Workboxes and snack breaks”. An easy to follow chart makes the box system so much smoother.
Follow the online program
If you have an online program, you can still utilize the workboxes. All it takes is a little bit of planning. Most people, who use online programs, have workbooks, worksheets, or printable worksheets that come with their program. You can easily break these up into the boxes, and have all the supplies that they need for it.
