These spheres made by stitching a jacket for a Styrofoam ball. They are quick and fun to stitch and make great gifts. Hang some on your Christmas tree. Or make several with interesting yarns and place in a bowl on your coffee table.
Finished size: 3 in. diam.
Skill Level: Easy
3 in. diam. smooth Styrofoam ball
Spray paint in color matching yarn (optional)
27 yds. worsted weight yarn
10 yds. worsted weight yarn for squiggles on top (optional)
Size I/5.5mm crochet hook (or size hook needed to obtain gauge)
64 6.5mm pony beads (optional)
Gauge: 14 sc x 16 rows = 4 in. x 4in.
Note: For those who are new to crocheting with beads, be sure to string the beads before you start to crochet. Count the beads carefully. Stringing on too many is OK; you can slide them off at the end. But you can’t add more beads. You will need to slide the beads down the strand of yarn and out of your way as you work. To add a bead to a single crochet: insert hook in next stitch, draw up a loop, slide a bead down so that it is snug against the back side of work of the previous row, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook. The bead will end up on the wrong side of your work.
Optional: If using a dark colored yarn, spray paint the Styrofoam ball in a matching color. Allow to dry.
String beads onto yarn if desired.
