The Chicago Cubs are playing spoiler. They beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 on some great pitching by Ryan Dempster and two home runs by Alfonso Soriano.
Carrie Muskat has posted an article at the Chicago Cubs’ website titled “Soriano’s homers back Dempster’s 15th win.” As Muskat reports, the Cubs’ wins have put the Padres in a position where the San Francisco Giants’ magic number is four with five games to play. Certainly that is no death warrant, since the Padres play them at the end of the season, but first they have two more games with the Cubs — and the Cubs are building momentum.
Carlos Marmol got his 36th save of the year. While this end-of-the year ride has been fun, it is too bad that his effort didn’t involve some postseason.
There seems to be more and more certainty when discussing interim manager Mike Quade’s future. The Cubs are now 21-11 under Quade since he took over from Lou Piniella upon Piniella’s unexpected departure for family reasons.
I can’t see, as I often write, how Chicago Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry can take a chance not keeping Quade. The players are on Quade’s side. One that is very vocal is tonight’s winning pitcher, Ryan Dempster, who feels that Quade has been supportive of the players and done what management has asked of him.
Dempster(15-11) will be the last Cubs pitcher to work this year, so he will have a chance to win 16 games.
It is interesting to listen to Soriano. He hit two home runs and is very exciting about finishing the season the way the Cubs have finished it. He says it is important and hopes the rookie players understand how important it is. He is determined to work hard in the off-season so that he can post even better numbers next year.
So how will the Cubs do this evening (Wednesday)? They have Randy Wells going for them. Wells has been up and down. I would have to say at this point that the Cubs are going to win. They just seem to have the momentum and they can afford to play for fun while the Padres have way more to lose.
Yeah, the Cubs will win. Hey, they might even sweep San Diego.
