Today was the Cubs’ last home game. They have been playing good baseball since Mike Quade took over, and hopes were high that they would leave Wrigley Field with a win. Pitcher Jeff Samardzija pitched tough his last time out. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out for Samardzija, and he and the Cubs went down 8-7.
Carrie Muskat has posted an article at the Chicago Cubs’ Website titled “Cubs make it interesting but drop home finale.” Muskat reports how the Cubs came back from a large deficit but couldn’t come all the way back.
The Cardinals jumped on the Cubs and Samarzija in the first inning, when Albert Pujols hit a three-run homer. Matt Pagnozzi continued the pounding by adding three RBIs. Samardzija (2-2) took the loss, and ultimately he gave up the total eight runs that the Cardinals scored.
The Cubs didn’t score until the fifth inning, when they scored three runs and then chipped away through the seventh, scoring four more times, but they were unable to make it back all the way.
The Cubs are now 19-11 since interim manager Mike Quade took over from Lou Piniella. I don’t think people expected Quade to do this kind of a job. As a result, he is a strong candidate to get re-hired for next year. He wants the job. One thing that was interesting to find out in Muskat’s report was that Quade has been operating for 30 years on 30 one-year contracts; he is used to uncertainty.
Quade took a few minutes to soak in the moment after the game. He complimented the coaching staff, the players and he was not too modest to leave himself out of the equation. He feels that he has done pretty well.
From here, the Cubs have four games with the San Diego Padres and three with the Houston Astros.
The Cubs beat the Cardinals this year 8-6. While it wasn’t complete domination, they have been a thorn in their side.
I don’t know what to think as far as how the Cubs will do in San Diego. I think they may be losing their sharpness a bit, or perhaps they play better on the road.
We’ll have to wait and see.
