There are a number of issues that are going on with the Cubs right now. The Cubs are tasting success as a team, and when that happens, more news typically surrounds the team.
Carrie Muskat has posted an article at the Chicago Cubs’ website titled “Barney admirably filling in for injured Castro.” As Muskat reports Starlin Castro was on the bench for the recent series with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The replacement for Starlin Castro at shortstop has been Darwin Barney. Going into the last game with the Cardinals as Muskat reports Barney “…was batting .406 with eight runs scored, two doubles and two RBIs in the past 11 games…” This has allowed Mike Quade to let Castro heal more completely and I’m sure there is an element of allowing Castro to worry just a little so that he is sharp when the Cubs hit Miami and the Marlins.
As I’ve already reported Tyler Colvin become just the fourth rookie to hit 20 home runs in his rookie season. Colvin rocked Chris Carpenter for a homer in the Cubs’ last game with the Cards.
The Cubs will be playing the Giants and the Padres at the end of the month. These are contending teams and I believe Mike Quade has the same hope for them as he had for St. Louis and that is to make their postseason hopes dim or at least embarrass them. While there is thought of changing the pitching rotation Quade has indicated that he will put a team out there that matches up the best.
One player that is not ecstatic is Xavier Nady. The ersatz first baseman for the Cubs, taking over for the departed Derrek Lee, isn’t sure he is loved enough to be kept for next year’s Cubs’ roster.
Nady has had trouble with injuries and also had some problems with the bat. However he has played a solid first base and even his hitting has come around. I don’t have a feel for what the Cubs might do. I like Nady as a player. He tries and he likes being with the Cubs’ organization.
Of course these days everyone’s happy.
