Daddy Joe’s Beach House BBQ & Grill in Gaffney, South Carolina, was closed when I tried to stop by to buy barbeque about six months ago. But this time I was fortunate to find it open while driving through Gaffney, South Carolina, on the way to visit my mom.
While waiting for my carryout order, one of the customers told me he drives 30 miles each way just to order their rack of ribs. He said the ribs melt in your mouth. Daddy Joe’s, he said, is the best barbeque in the South!
I ordered their chopped BBQ and sauce, baked beans , cole slaw and buns to take to my mom’s house for dinner. I was curious to see if the Daddy Joe’s Southern BBQ was as good as I’d read about in Southern Living magazine.
Since I’m a Marylander, I was also curious to see how the traditional South Carolina style BBQ would taste.
Although they separated the Southern BBQ and the sauce, I prefer it mixed together evenly so we mixed it up in a bowl before serving. The Southern BBQ had a powerful sour or vinegar taste as opposed to the sweeter and thicker robust BBQ sauce.
I have to say, the Daddy Joe’s BBQ was incredibly delicious even though it’s not what I’m used to.
They had a tomato type cole slaw called BBQ slaw, but we ordered the more traditional kind. But even this cole slaw was not exactly traditional. It had pickle or relish mixed in. I liked the cole slaw, although I don’t like it on my BBQ sandwich. I actually prefer to go bunless although my mom and son had their Daddy Joe’s chopped BBQ on buns.
I also loved their baked beans , which seemed to have a bit of BBQ and bacon thrown in for flavor. The cole slaw and baked beans complemented the BBQ meal.
If you are in the Gaffney, South Carolina area, near Spartanburg, I highly recommend Daddy Joe’s. I have to say, it really is the best barbeque in the South.
Other highlights on their menu include chicken wings, hot and spicy; jalapeno and cheddar hushpuppies, fried zucchini, beer battered onion rings and potato salad.
They also serve Texas BBQ using Texas toast, prime rib, BBQ plates, pulled chicken, grilled kielbasa, chargrilled chicken and burgers and a smoked chicken salad.
On the lighter side (when you are feeling just a little piggy), the Daddy Joe’s skinny menu includes grilled chicken breast, blackened chicken breast, rotisserie turkey, pulled chicken, salads and roasted tomato and grilled zucchini.
I give Daddy Joe’s BBQ a 4.9 out of 5 stars. It’s excellent!
