So, the other day my wife and I went out to eat with no children along. We do this about three times a month, it helps to have a break from the kids and just enjoy a quiet, relaxed meal without anyone screaming, crying or crawling underneath the table. About 3/4 way through our meal, we took notice of other children in the restaurant and how good they were being for their parents. Suddenly, our search went from being a casual glance, to a more determined effort in finding kids who’s behavior would somehow mirror the eating out problems we’ve had with ours. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any and for a few seconds we both just kind of sat there biting our lips in a quiet, perplexed disappointment. Then I said, “You know, Faith has always been good, we never have any problems with Faithy.” My wife instantly agreed with an enthusiastic response of how good our daughter Faith always is. It almost felt like we had won some sort of lottery in how quickly our attitudes changed!
You see, Faith has some sort of built in-inner conscience that sways her away from doing naughty things. She doesn’t want anything to do with getting in trouble. In fact, if the other children somehow do get her to partake in mischievious conduct, she’s the one who will stop when things start getting out of hand and tell either Mommy or Daddy about the terrible events taking place. When her, Bell and Logan were all still at home, I used to call Faith my inside contact or informant. She was my little spy, the eyes and ears into the naughty world of Logan and Bell. I could always count on her coming to tell me if they were misbehaving. I believe she inherited this trait from Misti and here’s why. My wife has always had a conscious and I believe her mother relied on her to tattle on the two brothers she had in the same way we rely on Faith to betray her siblings.
You see, I’m pretty sure Mist’s brothers were little monsters when they were young. I still laugh at a family picture of them I used to look at. I could never figure out why both boys, Doug and Darrick were so dirty? Then one day, their mother Sharon told me that before the picture was taken, they had found a dirt pile to play in and there wasn’t any time to change them. Although, being messy wasn’t the only thing about the picture that cracks me up, it’s the look they have on their faces. It’s that, “What can we get into next!” look they have that is not only funny, but somewhat un-settling. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen two boys who had more mischievious eyes, actually, now that I think about it, I do believe I’ve seen that look on Logan and Bell’s face occassionally. Either way, I believe Misti’s brothers got into so much trouble all the time that she had to build up some type of resistance to their antics. She developed an inner conscious that not only kept her from misbehaving with them, but also one that compelled her to tell on them when they were doing something wrong. Faith has inherited this same trait, she’s a good little girl just like her Mommy was.
A good example of Faith’s goodness can be seen in a recent act of terror by her siblings. It was just Faith, Bell, Logan and I at home. They had all been playing upstairs nicely while I was working on the computer. Lunch time came around and I sent them downstairs. (I knew I wasn’t ready to go down yet, but hey, what kind of mischief could they get create in just a few minutes, right?) About ten minutes later, as I was finishing up, Faithy came to me and said, “Daddy, your not going to like what’s happening!” She had that look of distress on her face, and it’s never good when your informant is so upset. This usually means something really naughty is going down! I quickly ran downstairs only to find Logan in our kitchen, up on the counter by the sink using the water spray thing to dowse our kitchen. I mean there was water on the counters, water on the cabinets and a ton of water on the floor. Suddenly, I saw that same look in his eyes that I’d seen in that family picture of Mommy’s brothers Darrick and Doug. That same naughty look of complete satisfaction in having accomplished a dirty deed. I spanked him pretty good for this one, it took forever to clean up. I’m talking like 8 big towels. In his defense, the water spray thing is pretty fun to use, he just wasn’t using it in the manner it was meant to be used. This is a good example though of how Faithy comes and tells us when things are getting out of hand. She’s our purely good child, we can always count on her to do the right thing and when you’re sitting in a restaurant full of good children with none of them misbehaving, trust me, that comes in real handy!
