Yeah I know what your thinking: of all the things I can potentially be doing to get the weight loss cycle kicking into the high gear, why on earth would I resort to the simple act of walking? After all I do it all day long everyday and it hasn’t helped me yet….why start now???? All fair points no doubt about it. Let me explain and you will soon see why taking a stroll is a more than worthwhile investment to your losing weight time.
When I was a personal trainer, about 90 percent of my clients came to me overweight and in need of shedding quite a bit of weight. No doubt I had grandiose plans in order to accomplish that and there were many excruciating exercises along the way that I put he/she in so as to get that stubborn weight off their bones. However oftentimes I began each day’s session with a simple walk around the gym track at a somewhat brisk pace and did this for about 10 minutes. Instead of a just walking and chatting like normal, I tweaked the act a bit by having the client turn their hands into fists and swing their arms while the moved around the track. We would walk at a pace that was just before the act of running and like I said would continue this for around 10 minutes. This simple exercise was a tremendously good idea in that it got the client’s heart rate up and active and stimulated the muscles all up and down his/her extremities. Once the exercise was completed, we were able to easily move into the more intense work that was on the docket and the body was ready to go to work. Less injuries and less pain in the muscles were prevented on top of this.
For those of you who cant make it to the gym and are severely overweight, going out for a walk before breakfast or after dinner 4 times a week is a great way to start getting your body into shape so that you can attack more vigorous workouts down the road when you feel you are ready. You would be shocked to see how many calories your body can burn just by simply taking a brisk walk while swinging your arms like I suggested. Some people feel strange walking this way down their street in public to which I suggest taking a drive to the local school and make use of their track. That way there are only a few people around and you wont feel as funny. One time around the track is a quarter of a mile and I always suggest trying to add a half a lap each time you go out there. Before you know it you will u to a mile and beyond. The body can truly adapt to the exercise that quickly and you will be burning mucho calories in the process.
So again a great way to start the losing weight battle is by taking one step at a time and walking is the optimum way to begin the process. From there you take on more challenging exercises as soon as you feel you are up to them and before you know it, you will be losing weight guaranteed.
