Pressure can bring out the best in people. At least that’s what happened on Monday night’s episode of ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ After performing their first routines, the dancers picked a song out of the mirror ball and had 45 minutes or less to learn it and dance it. Oh yeah, Brandy and Jennifer Grey, who scored perfect tens for the Rumba, are still tied for top spot. With a combination of the regular routines and the Instant Dance, each earned 57 points.
All the dancers have moments of being incredibly good, which means there’s no telling what will happen from week to week. Of course, Brandy and dance partner Maks are consistently good, along with Jennifer and Derek, although even they make a misstep every now and then.
Maks showed his bad boy side when Judge Carrie Ann Inaba dared to say Brandy didn’t start dancing soon enough during the waltz in their Instant Dance–the one they literally had minutes to learn. Bruno and Len loved the performance, with Len saying it was full of fun, flair and performance.
Mild-mannered host Tom Bergeron egged it on by asking Len what he thought Carrie Ann was full of–Len, to his credit, said Carrie Ann was right in her critique. Maks, time to get over it–Carrie Ann still gave the performance a 9.
Bristol Palin and dance partner Mark Ballas garnered the lowest score of the night, a 47. Their first dance, the Tango, earned good reviews, with Carrie Ann praising Bristol’s connection with Mark and Len saying it was clean and well rehearsed.
Bruno, who has a way of emitting Bristol’s name in a guttural explosion, told her she needed to be the bad girl all the way through, a reference to Bristol’s tendency to float in and out of character during performances.
Kurt and Anna ended up one point ahead of Bristol and Mark, with a 48. Their first dance was a waltz and their Instant Dance was the Cha Cha Cha. Kurt received good feedback from the judges, with Len saying the “whole feeling of the dance was beautiful. Bruno said Kurt lit up the room with his smile–but was it enough to light up the phones?
Kyle was impressive, setting the bar high as the first to perform the Instant Dance. He and Lacey danced the Jive, earning two 10s and a 9. Len said it looked as though Kyle had practiced for months instead of minutes. Kyle also charmed the judges with the dance he had practiced all week–the Viennese Waltz. Len called it gorgeous, Bruno was “totally charmed” and for Carrie Ann, “it was like watching a fairy tale come to life.” With a score of 56, I don’t think Kyle will be going home this week.
