The Freestyle Dance is the most anticipated dance of any “Dancing With The Stars” season. It comes at the end of the season which means that, hopefully, we viewers have weeded out all of the other celebrities leaving only the best competitors. It also means that these celebrities will have honed their dancing skills and should be at the peak of their game.
The Freestyle usually determines the winner of each season of “Dancing With The Stars.” Viewers base their judgment of the freestyle on these things: originality, personality, entertainment value, how well it is executed and how many great lifts were added.
While this past season of “Dancing With The Stars” was controversial to say the least, the three competitors did a good job with their freestyles. Kyle Massey’s freestyle to “Tootsie Roll” was both exciting and entertaining. Bristol Palin’s freestyle was…..interesting. And while many fans of “Dancing With The Stars” was disappointed when Jennifer Grey did not do her freestyle to “Time of My Life,” she did a wonderful dance to another “Dirty Dancing” song, “Do You Love Me.” Not only that, but Derek incorporated many of the dance moves into the freestyle while making it special for himself and Jennifer while bringing back many wonderful memories for the fans.
While Jennifer’s freestyle dance was sentimental, Kyle’s was entertaining and Bristol’s was….interesting, sadly, none of these made my top 5 list. Drew and Cheryl’s freestyle to “Save A Horse, Ride A Cowboy is a fan favorite but it also did not make my top 5. So what freestyles did? Read on and find out.
5) Brooke Burke and Derek Hough – Season 7
I am a big fan of the movie, “Grease.” I loved the music in that movie and when I first heard the strains of “You’re The One That I Want,” and saw Brooke and Derek’s costumes, I immediately sat up in my seat.
The dance was entertaining from start to finish. Brooke and Derek never stopped as they danced, tumbled, jumped and lifted themselves to the number one spot for season 7. As Bruno said, “You ended up in positions that I have only seen in the Kama Sutra.” I usually expect this kind of entertainment when the celebrities are people like Kristi Yamaguchi and Shawn Johnson, but when Brooke Burke did all those lifts and stunts, I was truly impressed. I had to give her points just for doing that tumble across the hard floor. Ouch!
4) Mario Lopez and Karina Smirnoff – Season 3
While I am not a fan of hip hop dancing, I truly enjoyed this freestyle dance on “Dancing With The Stars.” It just seemed to fit Mario Lopez and he really ran with it. And the way he looked in that outfit did not hurt.
Mario and Karina had that chemistry that makes the dances that much better. Of course, we know that they dated during that time but it really added something to their dancing. Mario had the rhythm and the talent to pull this dance off and it was truly spectacular. I had to agree with Bruno when he told Mario that he was a true dance idol and like Len Goodman said, “If that dance was a film, you would win an Oscar.”
3) Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson – Season 9
Kym Johnson has always known how to bring out the personality of her celebrities in the freestyle such as Warren Sapp and Joey Fatone. Partner her with Donny Osmond, a showbiz entertainer since he was “an embryo” and you have magic.
By making it a Vegas style dance filled with fun and entertainment, this “Dancing With The Stars” freestyle dance won my heart. I have always been a huge fan of Donny Osmond but I was prepared to vote against him if his freestyle did not meet my expectations, just as I had voted against Marie Osmond when she did that awful, doll freestyle dance.
Happily, I did not have to do that as Donny and Kym’s freestyle turned out to be one of my all time favorite “Dancing With The Stars” freestyle. It was entertaining and really showed off Donny’s personality – things I really look for in the freestyle dances. I totally agreed with Carrie Ann when she said, “Welcome to the Hall of Fame of the Freestyles.”
The next three dances could all be at number one. I had a very hard time choosing which two would be tied at second and which one would actually come in first, but after much deliberation, here are my choices.
2) (tie) Shawn Johnson and Mark Ballas – Season 8
When I saw Shawn and Mark dressed as Jabberwocky’s, I thought Shawn Johnson was the cutest thing I had ever seen. She maintained that cuteness through the entire freestyle and won my vote. Oh, who am I kidding? Shawn Johnson is adorable.
Shawn and Mark’s freestyle was so original that I immediately loved the dance. The lifts and stunts were excellent and we would have expected no less from Shawn Johnson. The dance was also fast paced, fun and very entertaining. Mark’s choreography was spot on.
As Carrie Ann said, “This is exactly what I wanted to see (in a freestyle).”
2) (tie) Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough – Season 10
I loved the music – “A Little More Satisfaction.” I loved the choreography – Derek is second to none when it comes to choreographing a wonderful routine. I loved the lifts – sadly, they messed up the final lift and that is why this dance is not number one.
What I really enjoyed was all the dancing that was put in between the lifts and the stunts. Nicole and Derek were in perfect sync as they danced their way across the stage, doing little bits of most of the dances Nicole had learned during her time on “Dancing With The Stars.” Excellent.
As Len said, “I saw Lindy Hop, I saw Salsa, I saw Quickstep, I saw Jive, I saw fun, I saw entertainment. Wonderful freestyle.”
1) Apolo Anton Ohno and Julianne Hough- Season 4
This freestyle dance started out fun and the fun never stopped. It had lifts, stunts, entertainment, originality, personality, great music, great dance moves and great costumes. This freestyle had it all – Julianne’s choreography is just as good as her brother’s and Apolo Anton Ohno performed it well.
I liked the dance moves with the scarves and absolutely loved when Apolo and Julianne pulled their headbands down over their eyes and began to dance blindfolded – still in sync. Now that takes talent, people.
Totally agreed with Bruno when he said, “This was so original. Great ideas. The blindfold – it was a surprise. That is what a freestyle should be.”
In case you haven’t noticed, my favorite dances were, for the most part, choreographed by Derek and Julianne Hough and Mark Ballas. These three are, in my opinion, the best pro dancers when it comes to making up the best routines and getting the most out of their partners. I guess I am not the only one who feels this way since these three have won 7 out of the 11 “Dancing With The Stars” mirror ball trophies.
