Lowe’s recently committed $100,000 to the Mission District based SF Day Laborer Program. This organization has been an effective tool of the community and day laborers for over 5 years. However, other areas of the city have banned day labor. For this reason, the Lower Haight was recently featured in the national press.
The article in KALWNews.org highlighted the facts surrounding the economy and how that affected life for the day laborers. These day laborers work through the SFDayLabor.org but still stand outside waiting for jobs in places like Berkeley.
Laws and the economy have transplanted former Lower Haight residents, but their voices are still being heard. You can directly support the SF Day Labor Program by hiring or donating. You can find out more at their site or call (415) 252-5375 to set up a job.
